Chapter 72 Coming Back To Haunt Clara

Annelise suddenly turned around, and Snowball quickly forced a smile.

“What’s wrong, Annelise?”

“Nothing. You shouldn’t be hanging around so late at night. Go home, or your mother will give you an earful.”

“Alright, Annelise.”

He stopped following Annelise and Hudson, taking a different path down the mountain by himself.

Still, he couldn’t help muttering, “Why can’t I be Annelise’s mate?”

Another day passed, and night fell.

Early winter had just set in, and every household burned bundles of hay to fend off the cold.

Well-off families even lit small fires, adding both light and heat.

Clara sat in her room, having her shoulders massaged by one of her mates while taking big bites of frozen meat.

She tore off a piece of frozen lamb leg and said, “Mom’s plan was brilliant. I never thought I could make that annoying female, Annelise, disappear without lifting a finger myself.

“Honestly, that girl drank herself into a stupor. Why is she always going against my mother? Also, where did she find the nerve to take part in the saintess selection?”

Clara glanced at her mate, leaning on a cane across from her. “But you’ve suffered the most, having to confront her first. Did it hurt?”

The sun-kissed mate shook his head.

“Annelise isn’t that skilled, but Rokky’s the real problem. He seems like a high-level male shifter. How he ended up in our tribe, no one knows.

“If

you bonded with him, that would’ve been perfect. Once you become chief, you’ll definitely be stronger than

your mother.”

“Even without him, it’s fine. Annelise just got lucky, that’s all,” said Clara.

As she spoke, thunder roared outside the window.

The wind howled, and the little fire in the room was instantly blown out.

At first, Clara wasn’t too worried. She had seen plenty of weather like this in her life, after all.

Her mates quickly got up to relight the fire.

Just then, Clara heard the window being pushed open.

“Who’s trying to crack open the window? Also, is that the smell of orchids?”

One of her mates answered, “It does smell like orchids in here. I heard some movement near the window too.”

The others responded, “No one’s anywhere close. It couldn’t have been us.”

Clara put down the frozen meat and stood up, walking toward the window.

She wasn’t even twenty-five yet and hadn’t awakened her true beast form, so her eyesight was no better than an ordinary person’s.

Just as she touched the window frame and was about to close it, a bolt of lightning struck.

In that instant, someone stood before her.

That figure curled her lips and smiled at Clara, who shrieked at once.

Clara stumbled backward in shock and tripped over the small stool she had been sitting on.

“Ms. Winslow?”

“What’s wrong, Ms. Winslow?”

“It’s Annelise!” Clara was certain she’d seen Annelise, given how close she was to the window. They’d been facing each other.

Meanwhile, her mates looked completely confused.

“Ms. Winslow, Annelise fell off the cliff and died! Given how steep and dangerous it was, she couldn’t have survived the fall.”

Just then, another flash of lightning lit up Annelise, and as Clara pointed at the window and

screamed, all her mates finally saw her.

Annelise’s messy hair, tilted head, and twisted shoulders made her look as if she’d fallen down a cliff, her broken bones all out of place.

She limped forward, trying to crawl into the room.

Clara screamed in terror.

The entire room of mates panicked as well, scattering and forming a barrier in front of Clara to let her escape.

Someone shouted, “Call the shaman! It’s a juuki! Annelise fell off the cliff and has returned as a juuki!”

Annelise nearly laughed when she heard that.

Although they couldn’t tell what a juuki really was, they knew that a dead shifter coming back to life was terrifying. In fact, they almost peed themselves.

It reminded Annelise of the little trick she had learned from Snowball before.

These shifters are kind of dumb. Honestly, ordinary humans wouldn’t fall for a stupid stunt like this, she thought to herself.

So she twisted her body even more dramatically, giving her all to play the juuki.

“You harmed me, Clara…”

“No, no, no! I did not!”

Seeing Annelise crawling spasmodically toward the window, Clara shrieked and ran outside.
