Chapter 93 The Egg
It honestly felt like popping a pimple.
And calling it a chicken egg? That was generous. It barely beat out a quail egg in size.
Still, for something that formed in just ten days that fertilized little lump was pretty impressive.
“So… do you guys still need the knife? ‘Cause it’s already out.”
A loud clatter rang through the room as Hudson let the knife fall.
He rushed over, scooping the egg into his armske it was the crown jewel.
“My baby!”

Word was, the egg would reach goose-egg size by the end of the month. Then it’d keep growing until month six, when it’d finally crack open.
Hudson was instantly obsessed. But the moment he spotted a little dent on Annelise’s belly, he leaned down and kissed it with care.
All three of his thick fox tails sprang into motion like trained assistants.
One slid behind Annelise’s head to support her neck.
One gently brushed her cheek.
The third scooped up the egg, balancing it delicately.
“Ms. Crawford, did it hurt?”
PHILA
Annelise gave a small shake of her head.
It had felt more like a surface tear. Barely any blood, and the cut was shallow.
Honestly, she kind of loved how easy this birth method was.
But Hudson acted like she’d gone through a battlefield.
“Ms. Crawford, you shouldn’t have pushed on your own! We could’ve helped and made the wound even smaller.”
“It’s fine. Really.”

To her, the scratch was so minor, it’d probably close in a day or two without any help.
Then she caught sight of Snowball. He was walking over slowly, hand still pressing his chest.
She almost tried to sit up, but Evan’s palm gently kept her down.
“Snowball, your heart’s still not stable. You just started recovery two days ago.”
Snowball shook his head. “It’s okay. It only hurts a little.
“Can I see Annelise’s baby?”
“It’s not a baby yet. It’s just an egg.”
She winked at him, reminding him that in this world, all shifters hatched from shells.
Hudson extended the tail carrying the egg toward him.
“Here. Take a look.”
Snowball leaned in. He stared at the egg for a while.
Something heavy pressed in his chest. It hurt in a way he couldn’t name.
Every day, he thought about it. How much easier things would’ve been if he had shown up as Annelise’s mate.
They shared the same background. The same world.
The connection would’ve been natural.
But even if that wasn’t how things turned out, he never once blamed the child.
Even if the other half of its blood wasn’t perfect, it still had half of Annelise’s. That made it worth protecting.
He asked, “Do you think it can hear me? If I say something now?”
He waved at the egg. “Hey there, little one. I’m your uncle!”
Annelise smiled at that.
If Snowball could act like this, maybe he really wouldn’t do anything to hurt the rabbit.
Still, there hadn’t been a single sign of him.
The High Priest had searched for two days straight.

Evan looked too, any time he had the chance.
But there wasn’t a trace.
Annelise felt the worry grow.

The next day, the tiny wound on her belly had already turned into a faint line. It didn’t hurt. She couldn’t even feel it anymore.
Early that morning, Annelise got out of bed and began to change clothes.
Snowball held his chest. “Annelise, are you going out to find Adrian?”
“I am. But I also want to check in on Clara.”
“Then let me come with you?”
Annelise patted his head. “You need to stay here and heal. Rest, okay?”
Clara lived far out. Evan, being a peacock, wasn’t exactly built to carry passengers over long distances. He wasn’t a hawk.
And Hudson needed to keep an eye on
the
egg.
So Annelise went to find Rokky.
He’d rested for ten days. He was finally moving around.
The reason he hadn’t visited the baby yet was that he was terrified he’d lose control and break
