Chapter 10 The Storage Space Upgrades Again
When Autumn met the other kids from the orphanage, they all sat down and shared a meal in silence After dinner, they went their separate ways again.
That was how adulthood worked. Everyone was busy.
No one really had the time to worry about how someone else was doing.
As Autumn was leaving, Poppy Morgan called after her. “Autumn!”
She turned around. “Poppy?”
“When Phoebe passed away, she left something with me for safekeeping.” Poppy handed her a small gift box. “She said that if I didn’t cry myself to death on the third anniversary of her passing, I should give this to you as a keepsake.”
The lolipop hanging from Autumn’s lips dropped to the ground.
For a moment, her tears nearly spilled over.
“The person Phoebe worried about most was you. You’re just too stubborn,” Poppy said softly.
Autumn forced a smile and took the box. “Thanks, Poppy.”
Then she added, “By the way, the weather’s been strange lately. Take care of yourself. Stock up on food and water if you can. It won’t go bad. And find somewhere safe and stable to live. Don’t stay in some rough neighborhood. Listen to yourself. You’re not even that old, and you already sound like a worried middle- aged mom.”
“Oh, get lost,” Poppy snapped and rolled her eyes.
Autumn burst out laughing and turned to leave.
“Autumn!” Poppy shouted after her. “Stay alive. Let Phoebe rest easy!”
Without looking back, Autumn simply raised a hand and waved. Carefree and unrestrained.
As she walked away, tears streamed down her face.
She thought that after living through the apocalypse once already, nothing and no one could ever touch her heart again.
She was wrong. There would always be a special spot in her heart reserved for Phoebe.
She opened the box. Inside lay an emerald pendant. It was obviously old.
Autumn recognized it immediately. As a child, she had seen Phoebe hold this pendant countless times late at night, gently rubbing it while crying.
Later, Poppy told her the pendant had originally belonged to Phoebe’s son.
He had died in a car accident at the age of five.
Afterward, Phoebe divorced her husband. Then she spent all her savings opening this private orphanage and rescued a group of abandoned children, including Autumn and Poppy
She poured all her motherly affection into those children. Through them, she kept loving the son she had lost. No, not all of them. Most of it went to Autumn.
Because Autumn’s personality resembled that little boy who had died too soon.
“Seriously,” Autumn muttered. “You hated seeing me cry, and now you’re making me cry on purpose the carefully put the box away and tossed it into her storage space. “Don’t worry. I’ll listen to you. I’ll stay alive
She had just lifted her foot to leave when a wave of dizziness suddenly hit her.
Instinctively, she grabbed the person beside her. Through her blurry vision, she could only make out a tall. handsome man.
“Dang…” she mumbled. Then she collapsed.
The elegant man instantly froze.
He had seen plenty of women throw themselves at him before. But a woman who cursed at him and then threw herself into his arms? That was a first.
When Autumn woke up, she was already in the hospital.
“You’re awake.” A strange man’s voice came from beside her. “Eat something.”
Autumn held her head and looked at him uncertainly. Her eyes were full of caution.
After surviving the apocalypse, she trusted no stranger.
The man frowned. “What’s with that look? I saved you.” He looked offended. “Don’t tell me you’re planning to repay my kindness by sticking me with the bill or something.”
Autumn immediately smiled at him. “Oh, so you’re the one who saved me! Thank you so much! Don’t worry, I won’t do anything like that. I won’t let a good person regret helping me. How much did you spend? I’ll pay you back.”
“At least you’ve got a conscience.” Only then did the man hand her a plate. “It’s not enough money for me to care about. Eat.”
Autumn looked down at him.
The man had charming eyes and a handsome face.
His clothes were tailored and expensive. One look told her he was rich
