Chapter 112 You’re Her Father
Only an idiot would give up a comfortable life here and go back to barely scraping by.
Besides, she needed her daughter to stay su she could send Killian’s wages home to support the rest of the family.
Once Willa’s mother stopped nagging, it finally grew quiet outside.
Then the commotion started inside.
This was Willa’s first time giving birth, and she had no idea what to expect. The pain had her screamingav the top of her lungs.
She couldn’t process a single word the doctors or nurses said. All she could do was scream.
Even Autumn, in the cave next door, could hear Willa shrieking like she was being murdered.
“Childbirth is terrifying.” Autumn’s face went pale. “There’s no way in hell I’m ever doing that.”
David, a lifelong bachelor, looked just as shaken. “That’s why I told you, even if something happens between you and Mr. Wright, you absolutely cannot get pregnant…”
“Do you even hear yourself?” Autumn rolled her eyes. “Leonel and me? Not in a million years.”
As they spoke, someone came looking for Autumn.
“Is Mr. Asher here?” A woman with equally short hair stood at the entrance to the cave and said, “I’m Audrey Wilson, one of Silas’s former classmates. I’m here to deliver the roster.”
Autumn got up to greet her. When she saw the list in Audrey’s hand, she smiled. “So you’re Audrey. I’m Autumn. Looks like we both have names that start with Au.”
Autumn took the list and quickly looked it over. “You work fast. You’ve already finished setting up the defensive perimeter. Got it. Thanks for all your hard work.”
Audrey froze. “I thought your name was Asher.”
“That’s the name I use around outsiders. To our own people, I’m Autumn.” Autumn winked. “And I’m a woman.”
Audrey’s eyes slowly widened until they looked ready to pop out of her head.
Oh, my God.
They had been neighbors for more than six months, and she had never realized Autumn was a woman.
“You’re like a real-life Mulan!” Audrey stared at her as though she were some rare species.
“I just did it to protect myself. Just like you.” Autumn smiled. “Let’s watch each other’s backs from now on.
Absolutely!” Audrey relaxed immediately.
Ash woman who had trained at a martial arts academy, she was constantly mistaken for a man, but she had never bothered correcting anyone.
At that moment, however, she felt as though she had finally met someone who understood her.
After seeing Audrey off, Autumn said to David, “All the ice outside has melted, so we’ll have to travel by boat again. But boats won’t be useful for much longer either. Once the extreme heat hits, the water will probably start evaporating fast. We need to disinfect all the nearby hills thoroughly, or we’ll be dealing with one problem after another.”
“Yeah.” David nodded. “Then I’d better cook as much as I can while there’s still time. Once it gets hot, no one will want to light a fire.”
By evening, the screams from the cave next door finally stopped.
Early the next morning, Autumn couldn’t contain her curiosity and hurried over. “Did she have the baby?
