Chapter 118 The Plague Takes Hold

Then he began vomiting blood in heavy bursts, as if someone had turned on a faucet and broken off the handle.

A man nearby quietly documented the symptoms as they appeared. “Three hours and twenty minutes from initial exposure to the onset of symptoms. Before the disease fully set in, the patient developed red rashes and pus-filled-sores. Once symptoms began, the pain became severe…”

“Please… save me…” the infected man begged from inside the room. “I don’t want to die…”

Leonel turned to Scott. “The medicine we developed hasn’t been tested on humans yet.”

Scott immediately understood. “You’re right, Mr. Wright. The only way to know whether it works is to try it.”

He immediately sent in a team wearing full protective gear to administer the medicine and collect blood samples for testing.

As Leonel prepared to leave, Scott grabbed his hand and thanked him repeatedly.

“We’re incredibly lucky you developed a way to detect the plague ahead of time, Mr. Wright. If that man had made it inside, there’s no telling how many people he would’ve infected.” Scott shuddered. “When you first warned me about this plague, I thought you were exaggerating. Now I realize you were actually understating it. If this spreads, the entire shelter could become one massive breeding ground for the disease.”

The shelter was the foundation of Scott’s power, and he had invested everything he had in it.

If it fell, being absorbed by the central shelter would be the least of his problems. He and his entire family could die.

The plague spread through the air.

They couldn’t spend every moment of their lives sealed inside protective suits.

The more power people had, the more they feared losing their lives, and Scott was no exception.

After this incident, he finally understood just how valuable Leonel was.

Leonel didn’t have many people under him, but every one of them was highly capable and among the best in their field.

Scott had to admit that Leonel had prepared for the apocalypse brilliantly.

Most people responded to disaster by hoarding food, water, and other essentials. Leonel had done more than stockpile supplies. He had surrounded himself with skilled people.

Whether in normal times or during the apocalypse, capable people were always the most valuable resource.

Now that value was impossible to ignore.

As sincere gesture of gratitude, Scott gave Leonel a large chest containing three tons of gold.

Leonel accepted it with a smile.

Three days later, Scott sent word that the medicine they had developed was effective.

It worked best when administered before symptoms appeared.

Once the disease reached an advanced stage, however, it was almost useless.

Clearly, preventing the disease was far more important than treating it.
