Chapter 119 Refugees

The newcomers were all elderly, women, and children. There wasn’t a single able-bodied young man among them.

“Please, help us! We can’t survive on our own anymore!” The moment they saw the patrol, the entire group fell on their knees and began sobbing.

“Stay where you are. Don’t come any closer.” One of the patrol members stepped forward to stop them “Who are you? Where did you come from? Why are you here?”

An elderly man at the front answered, “We’re refugees from Dunnweather. Dunnweather shelter is gone. If we hadn’t been out looking for supplies that day, we probably would’ve…”

At the mention of Dunnweather shelter, Autumn immediately walked over. “Wasn’t Dunnweather shelter taken over by the central shelter?”

“It was, but they only wanted young, healthy people. They refused to take the elderly, women, or children. We’re the ones they abandoned. We don’t want to die. We want to live too, but…” The old man wiped his tears. “I heard the same thing happened at several nearby shelters. They only took the young and strong.”

“How did you find this place?” Autumn asked.

“The people from the central shelter told us where to go. They said the Karthmoor shelter had food, water, and medicine and could take in a lot of people. They even gave us directions. We only made it here because we followed the route they gave us.” The old man looked at Autumn hopefully. “You’re from Karthmoor shelter, aren’t you? We finally made it!”

Autumn let out a disbelieving laugh.

So when the central shelter failed to take Karthmoor’s population, they decided to dump their unwanted refugees here instead.

“I’m sorry, but we’re not from Karthmoor shelter. This is our territory, so don’t come any closer,” Autumn said coldly. “If you do, you’ll have to face the consequences.”

“What? That’s impossible!” The old man stared at her. “We came all this way, and now you expect us to leave just because you claim this isn’t the shelter? We’re already here, and we’re not going anywhere. Go ahead and kill us if you have the guts!”

Many of Beckett’s patrol members still held on to the compassion they’d had before the apocalypse.

Several young men looked at Autumn pleadingly. “Mr. Asher, they’re elderly people and children. They really do need help. Isn’t there anything we can do for them?”

Autumn smiled.

Well, look at that. Apparently, I’m Mr. Asher now.

She had no authority over Beckett’s men, so she stepped back. “Whether you help them is up to you, but our hilltop shelter won’t take them in. Shouldn’t you ask your chief first?”
