Chapter 138 The Fall of Westfield Town
Autumn sent up a drone first. After making sure there weren’t any mutant bugs nearby, she unlocked the steel door opened the wire fence, and cautiously peeked outside.
The moment she stepped out, she saw Leonel doing the exact same thing from the next hill.
“Want to go take a look?” Autumn pursed her lips toward the neighboring hill.
“I was about to suggest the same thing.”
The group quietly made their way over.
One glance from a distance was enough.
It was a disaster.
Cries and sobs echoed across the hillside.
Evander appeared years older; his back was so bent that standing straight was impossible.
Autumn crouched beside one of the victims whose brain had been drained by the mutant mosquitoes. After checking the body for other injuries, she said, “These mosquitoes are picky eaters. They only go after brains.”
Someone else examined a body that had been attacked by spiders. “The spiders aren’t picky. They’ll eat almost anything… except the head.”
“No wonder they hunt together,” someone joked. “They make the perfect combo meal.”
Evander shuffled toward them on shaking legs. The instant he saw Autumn, he clasped her hands and begged, “The town is finished.” His voice cracked. “Only eighteen people survived. Every elder is gone. 1 don’t have much time left either. Please… take them with you. This apocalypse is going to kill us all.”
Tears streamed down his weathered face.
Maybe, just maybe, he regretted all the schemes and manipulation that had defined so much of his life.
“I know you all hate us. It’s all my fault. I was the one who forced them to do those things!” Evander cried, tears streaming down his face. “They had no choice. They were only following my orders! Now that this town is gone, there’s no reason for me to keep living. I’ll take responsibility for everything. I only ask that you take them in.”
Evander called over the dozen or so survivors. He lined them up and had them bow before Autumn.
“Look at them. They’re all young women. No matter the time or place, without women, there won’t be another generation. There won’t be a future.” He wiped away his tears and continued. “When the mutant mosquitoes and spiders attacked, we older folks stayed on the outside. We kept the girls behind us. The moment we did that, we all made up our minds. We’d trade our lives for theirs.
We’ve lived long enough. But they’re still young. It would be such a waste for them to die now.”
Autumn noticed something was wrong with his face. “Are you hurt?”
Evander raised what was left of his arm. It had been bitten off at the elbow. “A spider got me,” he said calmly. “We barely have any medicine left. I know I don’t have much time. Asher, I heard you’re a woman. too. I was blind before. I offended you, and I’m sorry. Please, woman to woman… take them in.”
Then he turned and shouted, “Bow to Asher!”
The dozen young women didn’t hold back, bent their backs repeatedly.
Willa stood furthest away from the group, holding her one-month-old daughter while bowing the hardest of all.
