Chapter 139 Love, Hope, and the Rising Flood

Autumn, Evander was right about one thing. Whether it’s war or the apocalypse, keeping the population alive and growing is what matters most.” Leonel spoke honestly. “The women from Westfield Town have all kinds of personalities. Some are good peuple, some aren’t. But that doesn’t really matter. They won’t be able to cause trouble here, and I won’t give them the chance. In this awful apocalypse, hearing a baby cry can actually bring comfort sometimes.

“Zain and I have already talked about marriages between our two communities., In fact, three couples are already in stable relationships. They could have weddings anytime. Silas’s two junior teammates have also gotten close to some of our people. If everything goes well, they’ll probably end up together too.

“We have food, medicine, doctors-everything we need to survive on our own.” Leonel looked at Autumn with complete sincerity. “I’m confident I can lead everyone through this apocalypse. People need / something to hope for. Without hope, you’re just a body going through the motions. I don’t want to live like that. Even if we don’t make it in the end, at least we’ll know we gave it everything we had. That’s enough for me.”

Autumn nodded. “I get what you’re saying. That’s good. It reminds me that I’m still human.”

Leonel smiled. “I knew you’d understand.”

“Once this wave of mutant bugs is over, there probably won’t be another one. The giant spiders covered everything they crossed with venom, though. We’ll need to clean it up.” Autumn quickly changed the subject. “Now that Westfield Town is gone, we’ll add the next hill to our territory. The weather’s good, so let’s start digging new caves.”

“Agreed.” Leonel said. “I was thinking the same thing. We accepted the women from Westfield Town, but that doesn’t mean they’ll immediately become part of our core group. We’ll turn the neighboring hill into a farming base. They’ll live and work there, and we’ll provide whatever supplies they need.”

“Works for me.” Autumn stretched lazily. “You handle the brain work. I’m heading back for a nap.”

“Oh, one more thing.” Leonel grinned knowingly. “If you happen to see Mr. Fisher and Kayla… don’t be too surprised.”

“Huh? Kayla? David?” Autumn blinked before it clicked. “Wait… those two are dating?”

Leonel nodded with a laugh. “Surprised?”

“I really am. I never expected a young, beautiful woman like Kayla to fall for David.” Autumn rubbed her chin. “Guess I’d better start thinking about a wedding gift.”

“We’ll see when the time comes.” Leonel smiled mysteriously. “Who knows? Maybe I’ll be the one buying the wedding gift first.”

When Autumn returned to her cave, she happened to find Kayla and David talking outside.

She was about to slip away when Kayla called out.

You were looking for me! Autumn glanced between Kayla and David

course I was Kayla warmly took her hand and placed a cloth bag in it. “I made these my If Wool knee warmers and wrist warmers. It’s still hot now, but who knows when it’ll turn cold again? Last time I saw you shooting, you kept pulling your sleeves over your hands. I figured your hands were probably getting cold, so I made these for you. I hope you don’t mind that they’re homemade. I cleaned the wool myself, then spun it into yarn with a spinning wheel I built.”

Autumn slipped them on. They fit perfectly.

Thank you. I really like them.” She smiled. “Am I the only one who got a pair, or did you make some for everyone?”

David gave an awkward smile.

That was all the answer Autumn needed.
