Chapter 15 Apocalypse Is Coming
Leonel looked at Autumn with an amused smile. Every move she made managed to surprise him in ways he never expected. And that was exactly why she had caught his attention.
The moment he started paying attention to her, though, he felt a strong sense of unease.
As soon as he heard that she and her boss had abandoned everything and moved into the mountains, he knew something was wrong.
So he copied her. He stockpiled enormous amounts of supplies, traveled all the way to Karthmoor, and deliberately chose to become her neighbor.
A man capable of becoming the richest person in an entire region obviously wasn’t stupid. He had noticed how much Autumn liked those rings, so he had someone search through his warehouses until they found another box. Now, he was here to see what information he could get out of her.
“Want a drink?” Leonel gestured toward a tent in the distance.
“Sure.” Since he was already here, there was no point avoiding him now.
So she agreed readily.
The two of them entered the tent. Someone brought over two cups of coffee and quietly left.
Leonel knew Autumn never told him anything for free. So, he simply placed the entire box of rings on the table.
She immediately reached for them.
Leonel pressed a hand down on the box. “How about we talk first?”
Autumn pulled her hand back and leaned comfortably into her chair. “What do you want to talk about?”
“How about we start with why you and your boss suddenly decided to hide out in a place like this?” Leonel asked casually. “Who are you hiding from? Karthmoor’s richest man, Harry Hunt?”
Autumn’s pupils contracted sharply.
She instinctively moved toward the scimitar hanging at her waist.
“Relax. He’ll never find you. I cleaned up your trail for you.” Leonel acted as if he hadn’t noticed the movement and continued casually, “You were careful, but not careful enough. Your disguise could fool security cameras, but it won’t fool data analysis and modern technology. I had people erase every trace, Unless you’re foolish enough to tell someone yourself, nobody will ever discover where that shipment of gold went.”
Shock rippled across Autumn’s face. After a long silence, she finally asked hoarsely, “What do you want from me?”
“Do you know that the gold didn’t actually belong to Harry?” Leonel poured her more coffee. “He was only holding it for another organization. Thanks to you, he’s had a rough time. They cut off four of his fingers.”
Not my problem.” Autumn replied coldly.
Leonel burst out laughing. “Well said. I’m just curious. How did you move that much gold? If you had team or some organization backing you, that would make sense. But as far as I know, you’ve always worked alone. Even your boss couldn’t pull off something like that.”
