“Could someone have gotten here first? What if they beat us to it and took everything?”
“Don’t be ridiculous! This is underwater, not on land! How are they supposed to haul all that stuff away? It’s surrounded by water. To move that much cargo, you’d need a freighter the size of a 10,000 ton ship. Did any of you hear anything like that?”
Everyone around him shook their heads.
The team leader wiped the water off his forehead and said gloomily, “This is insane. How the hell did Scott manage to move that much stuff out?”
“So we came all this way for nothing?” someone asked unwillingly.
“What else are we supposed to do?” another person replied. “Karthmoor is all water now. Where exactly do you expect us to start looking?”
The first man immediately fell silent.
“Forget it. We’re heading back,” the team leader growled. “Damn it. What a wasted trip. We got screwed!”
After Autumn returned to Aurora Base, she had just changed clothes and was about to get some rest when Beckett came rushing over.
“Asher, thank goodness you’re back. Come on, hurry. I need to show you something.” Without waiting for an answer, Beckett grabbed her wrist and pulled her outside.
At the entrance, they ran into Leonel. Beckett dragged him along. “Perfect timing. I need both of you to help me with something.”
Autumn and Leonel exchanged a puzzled glance before following him into his private cave.
The huge cave had been reinforced from end to end with steel beams as thick as a person’s
arm.
No wonder every other hill had collapsed while his place was still standing. He’d practically built an entire steel skeleton inside the mountain.
A huge terrain model sat on the table, showing what Karthmoor had looked like before the disaster. Of course, none of it looked like that anymore.
“Just say what you need.” Autumn dragged over a chair and flopped into it. “If I can help, I will.”

Beckett didn’t ease into it and went straight for the bombshell. “Mr. Wright, Asher, help me stash some nuclear weapons.”
Autumn and Leonel nearly choked on their own saliva.
Was that really something you could just casually ask?
Beckett looked miserable. “I don’t want to ask either. But I just got word that up north, the Ruskarians had a major nuclear accident because some of their warheads weren’t being stored properly. The contamination triggered massive radiation leaks. About half of the survivors in that area have already been exposed. Even if they survive, they probably don’t have much long left. Who would’ve guessed they’d built one of their nuclear storage facilities inside the crater of an old dormant volcano?”
Leonel and Autumn both sucked in a sharp breath. “Seriously?”
Beckett nodded grimly. “I honestly thought I could keep everything secure. But after this earthquake, tsunami, and volcanic eruption, I’m not so sure anymore. What worries me even more is that the central shelter might use this as an excuse to take control of the entire arsenal.”
Autumn blinked. “How’d all of that end up under your watch in the first place?”
“There’s a secret base here. I’m assigned there as a secondary post.” He blinked back innocently.
Autumn blinked faster. “A lot of them?”
“Not exactly a little.”
Autumn’s brain practically started overheating. Leonel finally spoke, “What makes you think we can keep them safe?”
“I don’t know,” Beckett said bluntly. “But if you two can safely store a compact fusion device, then I figure you can probably handle a few dangerous weapons.”
“Hold on.” Autumn stopped him. “If we agree to store them, how long are we talking about? We don’t even know where we’ll be in the future. The shelter is gone. Our mountain base is gone too. Other than staying here with you, there’s nowhere left in Karthmoor to stay.”
Beckett answered without hesitation, “Then stay here. Look around. Does it really matter anymore what’s yours and what’s mine?
“To be honest, I’ve spent too long living without anyone telling me what to do. I’m not exactly cut out for taking orders,” Autumn said frankly. “Unless I’m the one calling the shots.”
