Scott went quiet for a moment, then said, “I know what I need to do now. Thank you for the reminder. I was so far down my own rabbit hole I couldn’t see straight. I’d better get to work.”
With that, he hurried off.
Beckett watched Scott’s retreating back and said, “The man is a capable politician. He has his faults, but his strengths outweigh them. Wouldn’t you two agree?”
“There’s nothing shameful about a man looking out for his own interests,” Leonel said with a smile. “Nobody is perfect. For an official, getting as far as he has is impressive enough. And you’re not doing badly yourself, Beckett.”
“I’m still lacking somewhere, or I wouldn’t have been shipped off to Karthmoor.” Beckett smiled bitterly. “All I know how to do is drill soldiers and fight battles. Hand me a city to govern, and I’d fall flat on my face.”
“So isn’t this arrangement perfect? Scott handles the governing, you handle security, and I handle making money,” Leonel said, smiling. “All Autumn has to do is sit at the top and rule.”
Autumn laughed. “I’m just here to pick up whatever’s left behind!”
“You are. And you came away with the best deal of all,” Beckett and Leonel answered in the same breath.
They said it as a joke.
But Beckett, Leonel, and even Scott, who had only just walked out the door, had all worked out by now that there was nothing simple about Autumn.
She could warn them before a disaster arrived. She had an enormous storage space that kept everything fresh indefinitely and could even grow crops in it. She had a level of raw fighting power that turned a man’s blood cold, and a mind that stayed absolutely calm no matter how high the stakes climbed.
She felt like the last hope this world had left for humanity.
If she lived, the world lived.
If she died, the world died with her.
Which made her, beyond any argument, the sovereign of them all.

After Scott sent the delegation from the central shelter off with their tails between their legs, they found a quiet spot somewhere and huddled together to talk it over.
“That Mr. Marsh is impossible. Look at the state of the world, and he’s still demanding paperwork from me? To hell with his paperwork. I’ve never even seen what a sealed official order looks like.”
“Enough. The man is all mouth. Why waste your temper on him?”
“So we came all this way for nothing?”
“Are you stupid? Mr. Marsh doesn’t have those people tied up with a rope. We work on them quietly, get them to walk out of here with us, and what exactly are Mr. Marsh and Beckett going to do about it?”
“Fair enough. So what about Beckett? Those weapons of his were requested by name from the top. If we go back empty-handed, how do we explain ourselves?”
“That’s the problem. We’ll go see Beckett on our own. The Karthmoor shelter is gone now, so his excuse about needing to protect it doesn’t hold water anymore. I’d like to see him try to brush us off this time.”
“Well said. We split up, then. One group works the crowd here, the other goes to Beckett.”
“Agreed.”
And so, the quiet hillside erupted into activity the moment the central shelter’s people arrived.
Within a single day, a good number of people who had been happily waiting for rescue were talked around and wanted to leave, to go make a living at the central shelter.
Even Silas himself got pulled aside for the pitch.
Silas answered with a question of his own. “Is the central shelter really as good as you say?”
“Of course.” The man answered without a shred of embarrassment. “We have over 10 million people. The streets look no different than they did before the apocalypse. Everyone lives and works in peace, and the pay is good. Take a job, and the credits you earn in one day are enough to feed your whole family.”
Silas asked, “If it’s that good, why did you turn down the old man who just asked to come with you?”
The man laughed awkwardly. “For now, the central shelter only takes able-bodied adults. No elderly, no children.”

“And why is that?” Silas asked.

“That’s… hard for me to say. We already have plenty of old folks and children of our own, and we feed every one of them for free. Bring in more, and we simply can’t carry the load. Able- bodied adults are a different matter. They arrive and go straight into the shelter’s construction work. Even a rich man’s granary runs dry eventually.”
