“Is this really necessary?” Autumn honestly didn’t want the position. She was used to drifting and doing as she pleased, and she hated being tied down.

“It is necessary,” Scott said. “What happened today should never have happened. That’s my failure. From now on, the people of Aurora Base need to be told that whoever holds this seal is the one who actually calls the shots around here. As for who that person is, well, we’ll let them guess.”

Leonel nodded. “That’s exactly how I see it too.”

Autumn gave in and took it, tossing it into her storage space without ceremony. “Fine, fine. Do whatever you want…”

She never finished the sentence. That familiar wave of dizziness slammed into her out of

nowhere!

“Fuck!” Autumn went straight over backward.

Leonel crossed the room in one stride and caught her, steady as anything.

He caught her with such practiced ease that it was almost painful to watch.

“What’s wrong with her?” Beckett and Scott went white as sheets and shot to their feet.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. We’re used to this by now.” Leonel hurried to calm them down. “Autumn does this every so often. But every time she passes out, she wakes up stronger than she was before. So let’s look forward to seeing how strong she is this time! I’ll take her to rest. Tell the mess hall to put together plenty of food. Once she’s slept it off and eaten her fill, she’ll be right as rain.”

Autumn slept like the dead.

Three solid days!

By the time she woke up, she was so hungry her eyes had gone green.

“Food, food, food, somebody get me food, I’m starving to death here!” Autumn started hollering the second her eyes opened.

David was used to it. He set a basin of food down in front of her without missing a beat and pressed a fork into her hand.

Autumn tore through it like a woodchipper.

Stuffed and satisfied, Autumn flopped straight back and sprawled out.

“How come you were out so long this time?” David fussed. “You young people need to learn some restraint!”

“Go say that to Kayla and see how it goes!” Autumn couldn’t even be bothered to argue.

“Oh, get out of here. That’s completely different.” David went red in the face and carried the empty basin out.

The moment David left, Leonel came in.

Leonel looked her over anxiously. “How are you feeling? You were out for a long time.”

“Mm.” Autumn’s face was blank. “Why did I suddenly pass out like that?”

Normally, that only ever happened when her storage space upgraded.

Hold on.

The storage space.

“Give me a second.” Autumn threw the words over her shoulder and, without waiting for Leonel to react, she vanished straight into the space right in front of him.

The instant she was inside, the sight of it knocked the wind out of her!

The last upgrade had turned the space into a small world of its own.

But it had only been a small world, and there had still been plenty missing from it. Snow- capped mountains, deserts, badlands, an ocean.

It was why she’d had to dig a pit just to farm saltwater fish.

This upgrade had rebuilt the place from the ground up. It had a complete, self-sustaining ecosystem now.

It looked like one of those hidden realms out of a fantasy novel, with every kind of terrain and landscape she could name.

Every species of plant and animal was accounted for.

The whole thing was a picture of perfect peace.

She hadn’t tested how long she could stay inside yet, but going by the scale of the evolution, it wasn’t going to be a short time.

Autumn didn’t want to keep Leonel waiting, so she took a quick look around and came back

out.

The whole vanishing act left Leonel blinking like a man who’d missed a step.

“Autumn, where did you just go?” Leonel asked. “Your storage space?”

“Mm.” Autumn nodded. “I took a look. It upgraded. Everything’s fine!”

Leonel let out a breath. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“There’s something I’ve never been able to work out.” Autumn propped her face in both hands. “I can’t make sense of the pattern.”

“Tell me about it. I’ll help you think it through.” Leonel poured her a cup of coffee.

Autumn wrapped both hands around the cup. “In the beginning, the space was just a big box. All it did was hold things. But since then, it’s upgraded several times.”

“The first upgrade was the gold.

“The second was the emerald pendant.

“The third was the rings.

“The fourth was the seeds.

“The fifth was the antiques.

“And now the sixth one is a seal.

“Is there any logic in that at all?” Autumn looked at Leonel, completely lost. “It worries me. I’m out there collecting supplies, and if I accidentally pick up something that upgrades the space, I’ll just drop where I stand.”
