Autumn covered her face with both hands. “Give me a minute. I’m having real trouble accepting this.”

Leonel smiled again. “All right. Take your time. And whatever you decide, I’ll back you all the way.”

“Mm,” Autumn answered him in a small, flat voice.

The moment Leonel left, Autumn pulled the blanket up over her head.

Her thoughts were a complete mess.

“Kayla, what are you doing here?” Autumn threw off the blanket and started to sit up, but Kayla pressed her back down.

“I couldn’t stop worrying about you, so I came to see for myself. David just told me you slept for three days before you woke up,” Kayla said. “You have no idea how worried I’ve been.”

It touched Autumn more than she expected. “Thank you. I’m fine, really.”

“Autumn, you don’t understand how much you mean to us,” Kayla said. “Without you, I’d probably have already… ugh, listen to me. You’re going to tell me I’m being dramatic. But it isn’t just me. You matter to David, and you matter to everybody else here too.”

Something stirred in Autumn’s chest, and her scalp prickled as an idea began to take shape. It was growing too slowly, though. A flash went off somewhere in her head, an idea shot past, and she couldn’t catch hold of it in time.

“We haven’t known each other long, and we’ve spent even less time together than that. But in an apocalypse that eats people alive, we’re a real family,” Kayla said. “Whether things work out between David and me or not, I’ll always think of you as blood. You’ll never understand what happened the moment you told the four of us women, that you were a woman too. The chains just fell off us. Autumn, thank you for carving out a place for women in this world and giving us room to breathe.”

Autumn’s eyes flew open, and she bolted upright.

She knew the real secret behind the upgrades!

Kayla nearly jumped out of her skin. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Something just clicked.” Autumn took Kayla’s face in both hands and smacked a kiss on her cheek. “You are my lucky star.”

Kayla turned bright red.

Autumn threw off the blanket, grabbed her jacket, and ran out the door still pulling it on.

She skidded to a stop in front of Leonel, caught him by the arm, and said, “I’ve got it. I’ve finally got it!”

Leonel smiled. “Good. That’s all that matters.”

“It’s love and legacy,” Autumn said. “The space upgrades because there’s love around me. It upgrades because I’ve come to understand what it means to pass something on. That’s all it

ever was!”

Autumn had never been able to work out why she’d been reborn at all.

In that moment, she understood.

Whatever was up there had given her a second run at it because it wanted to see a different ending.

In her last life, she’d joined plenty of groups and run with plenty of powerful people, but in the end she’d always been fighting alone.

And every other survivor was exactly the same.

Nobody trusted anybody. Everybody believed in themselves and nobody else.

Which was why all 2,000 of them ended up as ash in the skyfire at the end.

So, the heavens had picked her out, handed her a fresh start, and used gold, an emerald pendant, seeds, antiques, and everything else to hint at how to clear the run.
