Every time a boat docked, a crew was waiting to haul the catch in, moving it into the caves like a column of ants.

Autumn didn’t have to lift a finger. She sat there while the conveyor belt carried crate after crate up in front of her, swept them into the space one after another, then threw the empties back on the belt to go out and get filled again.

They kept it up for two straight days.

Once they’d stripped the surrounding waters of just about everything swimming in them, Autumn sent word down for everybody to turn back and stay in.

Because someone who knew meteorology had told her rain was coming.

Autumn wasn’t about to gamble several thousand lives on it, so she called a halt immediately and had Beckett bring his people back at top speed.

Beckett wasn’t the type to push his luck either.

Autumn said come home, and he had them home.

Their boats had barely been stowed inside the caves when the rain started rattling down outside.

One man with a death wish decided he’d run out and take a shower in it.

He didn’t make it more than a few steps before he started screaming. “Aah! It hurts, it hurts!” “Quick, get back here!” The people in the cave scrambled and reached out to drag him in.

The second someone reached a hand outside, a raindrop struck it. White smoke went up where it landed, plain as day, and the man’s palm was burned clean through in front of everyone!

“Aah!” He howled and thrashed on the ground in agony.

Someone rushed over, grabbed him by the legs, and hauled him back inside like a dead dog. “Move, get him to the infirmary!”

“So what about the guy still out there?” somebody asked.

Every head turned toward the first man, the one with the death wish.

He’d made it three steps back toward the cave before he pitched face-first onto the ground.

It didn’t take long.

Thick white smoke poured off every inch of him, and then, he was nothing but a puddle of yellow fluid and a set of bones.

“Blegh.” A good number of the people watching clapped hands over their mouths and gagged.

“God, what is that smell? It’s burning my nose!” someone said, pinching their nose shut.

“Look at this! There’s something wrong with that rain!” somebody shouted, pointing at the mouth of the cave. “That’s got to be sulfuric acid! It’s eating holes in the ground where it lands! No wonder the guy turned into a skeleton-”

Right then, the big LED screen mounted at the top of the cave lit up. It detailed where the acid rain came from and what it could do, repeatedly warning everyone not to leave the cave under any circumstances and making it clear that anyone who did was on their own.

They’d all just watched a living person get melted down to a skeleton, so nobody was in the mood to argue about how vicious the rain was.

After this many rounds of disaster, the contrarians had mostly been weeded out. The ones still breathing were the ones who listened.

So, everybody quietly took three steps back and made very sure to keep their distance from the entrance.

Meanwhile, Kayla came looking for Autumn. “Autumn, do you have any glass containers? The bigger and more numerous, the better.”

“What do you need those for?” Autumn asked, puzzled.

Kayla pressed her lips together. “I was thinking. This acid rain is vicious enough that if we could collect it, we could use it as a weapon later. What do you—”

Autumn’s eyes lit up instantly. “You’re absolutely right! Hold on, let me go look!”

category.

She’d never stockpiled glassware herself, but Leonel and Scott both had.

When Kayla came back, she was nearly blinded by an entire cave packed wall to wall with glass. jars, glass bottles, glass drums, and glass vats.
