Chapter 18 Are You Insane?
Before long, one of the guards came out to check what was going on.
Autumn pulled a length of steel wire from her ring, slipped silently behind him, and looped it around his neck with a quick twist. Crack. His head tilted to the side, and he went limp.
A cold smile touched Autumn’s lips. Carefully, she lowered the body into a seated position against the wa making it look as though he had simply fallen asleep.
Her fingers slipped into his pocket and found an access card. A quick swipe later, the front gate opened
People in Drakoria, whether wealthy or poor, had lived under protection for too long. They had grown too comfortable. It never occurred to them that someone might actually kill without hesitation.
As a result, Autumn eliminated three more guards on her way inside with ease.
That so-called philanthropist’s villa was only two stories tall. The real secrets were underground.
Autumn didn’t even glance upstairs. Heading straight for the basement, she swiped open a heavy steel door.
Just as she was about to slip inside, a voice called out from within. “Samuel, what the hell is going on. outside? Why are several cameras suddenly offline?”
Without a word, Autumn followed the sound of the voice and hurled her scimitar.
Thud.
Another one down.
She crept over, retrieved the weapon, and sat down at the security station. A few quick clicks later, she had access to every surveillance feed in the basement.
Perfect.
The treasure vault was one floor below.
Apparently, that so-called philanthropist had gotten wind of something ahead of time. The entire second and third underground levels were packed wall-to-wall with supplies.
There were compressed biscuits, dried fruit, preserved goods, canned ham, canned fruit, canned fish, rice, flour, dried produce, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, gasoline, diesel, generators, solar panels, all kinds of purified and drinking water, plus coal, charcoal, and fruitwood charcoal. It had everything.
Gold bars sat openly on shelves against an entire wall, practically daring someone to steal them.
Not far from the next room was the place where that so-called philanthropist tormented children.
Since it was daytime, he had apparently spent the entire night indulging himself and was now sleeping soundly.
Excellent.
Everything was lining up perfectly.
Autumn efficiently destroyed every active surveillance system. She backed up the old footage and stored it safely. Everything else went straight into her storage space. Those recordings would be worth a fortune in future reward points.
Kids who grew up poor learned how to make use of everything.
After putting away her scimitar, she changed into a security uniform and calmly headed down to the second underground level.
“Rowan? Aren’t you off today? Why’d you come?” A guard spotted Autumn, but he didn’t realize she was an impostor. He even greeted her warmly. “Boss is probably still asleep. If you wake him up, he’ll definitely take it out on you.”
Autumn gave a vague response. “Things are a mess outside.”
That guard didn’t suspect a thing.
Things really were chaotic outside. Everyone was glued to their phones, scrolling through videos and trying to figure out what exactly was happening.
