Chapter 20 Investigation

“What’s your name, young man?” asked a volunteer coordinator wearing an armband as he recorded names.

“Asher,” Autumn answered.

“We’re recruiting volunteers right now. The stipend is 300 dollars a day. You’ve got plenty of strength. Interested in signing up?” the man asked.

Autumn shook her head. “I’d like to, but someone in my family got hurt and needs looking after. I only came out to buy medicine.”

The man sighed regretfully and moved on.

As Autumn continued through the city, she noticed that not a single store along the streets was open. People were still trying to process what had happened. Order had been restored for now, but it wouldn’t last much longer.

Because the extreme heat had arrived.

Autumn wiped the sweat from her forehead. Her clothes felt hot, sticky, and suffocating, making every breath uncomfortable.

She decisively got back in her vehicle and returned to the shelter.

By the time she arrived, evening had fallen.

Yet the heat was still unbearable.

“Go take a shower,” David called out. “I’ve already filled the tub for you. Made some cold treats too. Come cool off after you’re done.”

“Okay.” Autumn headed straight inside to wash up.

David watched her disappear down the hallway and smiled helplessly.

She had changed clothes, but the smell of blood still lingered on her. A former chef like David could tell the difference immediately.

That wasn’t animal blood. It was human blood.

Autumn really wasn’t the same person she used to be.

She finished her shower quickly, towel-dried her hair, and came back out.

That was the nice thing about short hair. It didn’t need a hair dryer. A quick towel-off was enough.

As she ate the shaved ice David had prepared, she asked, “What’s going on next door?”

“They’re still bringing supplies in,” David replied. “Looks like another group arrived. What exactly does that Leonel guy do? How does he have so many people working for him?”

No idea. He looks rich.”

“Obviously.” David rolled his eyes at her. “We already have enough supplies to last us a long time. Stop putting yourself at risk.”

Autumn set down her bowl of ice and sighed. “David, if you want to stay comfortable until the very end. you have to act when the time comes to act.”

David fell silent for a moment. “I understand. I’ll start working on getting stronger.”
