Chapter 30 Bounty
Leonel only smiled without answering.
Autumn gave him a thumbs-up.
Now that was a real sense of security.
While they enjoyed their meal in comfort, wildfires were breaking out all over the world.
Countries with large forests and mountainous terrain were especially hard-hit.
Wildfires.
Wildfires everywhere.
The weather had already been scorching hot and dry. With all the fires burning, it felt as if the air itself had become distorted by the heat.
After returning to her cave, Autumn pulled out her phone.
The neighborhood group chat was filled with people crying and complaining.
Unit 4-1-103 posted, “What am I supposed to do? There are four people in my family. Two have already died from the heat, and my wife is about to pass out too. I’ve made so many emergency calls, and not a single one has gone through. Has the government abandoned us?”
Unit 7-4-202 replied, “Calling won’t help. The ambulances are overwhelmed. Instead of complaining here, you should take advantage of the cooler night and get them to a hospital. They might still have a chance.”
Unit 4-1-103 wrote, “I don’t have a car. Does anyone in this group have one? Please help us get to a hospital. I’ll pay three times the normal rate.”
The group fell silent. Nobody responded.
It wasn’t that people didn’t want the money.
Nobody dared to go outside.
Earlier that day, someone had insisted on testing their luck and tried to leave the complex.
They hadn’t even made it past the front gate before collapsing.
When people went to retrieve the body after dark, they discovered that the person’s face had been severely burned by the scorching pavement.
Nobody wanted to die.
The weather was no longer suitable for being outdoors.
When the person asking for help saw that nobody answered, he immediately started cursing everyone in 4 the group.
The more he cursed, the less anyone wanted to respond.
At that moment, someone suddenly asked a question in the chat.
“Has anyone seen my husband in the last few days? He said he was going to find a girl named Autumn Montclair. Does anyone know her?”
The previously quiet group instantly came alive.
Several people immediately responded.
“Who’s your husband? Why was he looking for some young woman?”
“That’s none of your business! Just tell me if you’ve seen him!” the woman replied aggressively. “Or are you all planning to cover for that shameless little tramp?”
Then she started tagging Autumn directly.
“Montclair, you shameless little tramp, get out here! My husband went looking for you the night before last. Give me my husband back!”
Autumn looked at the messages on her phone and immediately laughed.
It had been a long time since anyone had openly provoked her. She almost missed it.
Autumn replied, “Which husband are we talking about?”
