Chapter 32 Into the Shelter

“Thanks!” Autumn took a massive gulp and smacked her lips. “Not bad.”

Forgive her lack of sophistication; she really couldn’t taste the difference.

Leonel paused for a second, then laughed.

“The shelter recently got a new material. It’s paper-thin, feels like you’re wearing nothing, but the insulation is incredible. It can regulate your body temperature by around 120 degrees, whether it’s extreme heat or extreme cold. Meaning that, in this weather, wearing one of these temperature-regulating, suits makes it feel like a comfortable 68 degrees. Same thing in extreme cold-even if it’s over a hundred below zero outside, it’ll only feel like around minus four.”

Autumn’s eyes lit up. “They actually have something like that?”

Leonel nodded. “That’s why I agreed to trade with the shelter.”

“How many can we get?” Autumn asked, becoming even more interested.”

“I’m not sure how much they have in stock. I’m planning to trade a truckload of purified water and medicine.” He reminded her. “What they need most right now is water, then medicine, then food. The whole world knows crops have failed, so food has become the most valuable currency. If you need help transporting your supplies, I can spare you a truck.”

The rejection almost slipped out of Autumn’s mouth, but she caught herself and decided to go along with it, “Okay, thanks.”

“We’ll leave after dark, once the temperature drops,” Leonel said. “We’ll go through the back mountain. My people control that route, so it’ll be completely safe.”

“Works for me.” Autumn smiled at him.

Having a powerhouse like Leonel as a neighbor was incredible!

His access to information was something she could never match.

In her previous life, she’d never even heard of anything like this.

If she had, she would’ve stocked up on it long ago.

“When will the satellites fall?” Leonel asked.

“Sometime after the extreme cold, when the Earth’s magnetic field changes. All the satellites in the sky will lose signal and drift in outer space. After that, every country on the planet will lose all forms of communication,” Autumn answered.

Leonel fell silent for a moment, then asked, “So, at most, we’ve got another six months?”

“Pretty much

I see. He nodded. “Were they ever able to launch satellites again?”

“How?” Autumn gave a bitter smile. “After the extreme cold came hurricanes, sandstorms, poisonous insects, toxic fog, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Humanity was too busy trying to survive, there was zero energy left to rebuild industry. Leonel, stop kidding yourself. Things are only going to get worse from here, not better. The only chance of seeing a new beginning is if you can survive the final skyffre.”

Leonel gave a bitter smile, too.

That evening. Autumn and David met up with Leonel. Together, they followed a three-foot-wide winding trail down the mountainside, reaching the foot of the mountain after about thirty minutes.

Fortunately, the path ran through a cave, so it wasn’t too hot.

Otherwise, even at night, the heat would have left them dehydrated.

At the foot of the mountain, they climbed into the vehicle. The moment the AC blasted over them, they felt like they were finally coming back to life.
