Chapter 33 Making a Deal

At that point, some nouveau riche guy spoke up. “Mr. Marsh, it’s not that we don’t want to help. We just don’t have the resources. You know I’m in the grain business. There isn’t any grain to buy anymore. Even if I wanted to contribute, I couldn’t.”

Another man chimed in, “Exactly. I’m in the seafood business I haven’t made a dime this month, and I’m still paying rent, utilities, payroll, and truck leases. I’m losing money every day. The government can’t kek fleecing us without helping us out too.”

The room filled with murmurs.

Scott Marsh ignored the complaints and turned to Leonel. “What do you think, Mr. Wright?”

Leonel answered calmly. “Supporting the government’s efforts is ultimately supporting my own business I’ll do everything I can to help.”

A smile finally appeared on Scott’s face. “Mr. Wright is indeed a man who sees the bigger picture.”

Leonel continued, “But I’m still a businessman. I have people to support, so forgive me for putting profit first. What do I get in return? As long as there’s a fair return, we can make a deal.”

Scott waved his hand. Someone immediately carried in a huge map and hung it on the wall.

Pointing to it, Scott said, “Everyone, take a look. This is what the shelter will look like once construction is complete. I’m sure you’ve all realized how devastating this disaster is. This isn’t a regional crisis. It’s global. Every continent has been affected. That’s why these shelters are being built. And who says the extreme heat and drought will be the last disasters we face? The sooner you move into the shelter, the sooner you’ll have a stable place to live. I can make one promise. Those who donate supplies in the first round will receive priority housing in the shelter. Not only will you get a villa in the residential neighborhood, but you’ll also receive five additional spots you can give to family or friends free of charge.”

An uproar immediately swept through the room.

The folks who weren’t particularly well-connected were reeling from the news that more disasters were on the way.

Those who had decent money but weren’t mega-rich were panicking over how much they’d have to donate to secure a spot.

Some remained perfectly calm. They’d clearly come prepared.

And some were even more direct, getting up immediately to start choosing locations in the residential neighborhood. These were the highly connected ones who’d known the news in advance, hoarded plenty of supplies, and were ready to secure their spots first.

Scott slowly looked around the room. “Ladies and gentlemen. Karthmoor has a population of eight million people, and that’s not even counting visitors and temporary residents. But this shelter only has room for five million. Spots are limited. First come, first served!”

Then he looked at Leonel again

As expected, Leonel was the first to speak. “I’m willing to donate one truckload of purified water, along with medicine.”

The room fell silent.

Everyone turned to look at him.

A smile crossed Scott’s face. “Thank you for your generosity, Mr. Wright. To show our appreciation, we are reserving Villa One for you.”
