Chapter 47 The Hunters Become Prey
“Mr. Victor, if you want to call off the deal we made earlier, I’ve got no problem with that,” Leonel answered coolly. “I never sell out my own people, ever. You and I clearly aren’t cut from the same cloth, so there’s nothing left to say. Good day.”
With that, Leonel walked off without so much as a backward glance.
As she left, Autumn turned back and shot Preston a long, meaningful look.
That look drove Preston into a frenzy, and he started howling. “Dad, I don’t care. I’ve got my eye on him and I want him!”
Victor tried to calm Preston down. “He’s just some broke little punk. What’s so special about him? With all these gorgeous women around, aren’t there enough for you to enjoy?”
“That’s different! A man is way more of a thrill!” Preston shot back, sulking. “Dad, do you still want grandkids or not? If I’m not happy. I’m not making any babies!”
As he said it. Preston irritably kicked over a nearby tent. “Out, out, out, all of you get lost! Everybody out of here!”
Just like that, the whole crowd of young people who’d been having the time of their lives found themselves chased off by Preston.
Victor was exasperated that his boy wouldn’t get his act together, but he doted on him all the same. “All right, all right, don’t be upset. He’s just some punk. I’ll figure something out and get him for you, that’s all. But you have to promise me you’ll keep it to a bit of fun and nothing more. Don’t go wrecking your health over it. You’re my only son, and I’m counting on you to carry on the family name!”
Only then was Preston satisfied. “Relax, Dad. It’s a fling at most. I won’t hold up your grandkids!”
Only after that did Victor say, a nasty edge creeping into his voice, “Leonel doesn’t know a good thing when he sees it. He’s nothing but an outsider, and he’s still got the nerve to go up against a Karthmoorian. It’s only because it’s the apocalypse. In the old days, I’d never have let him off so easy!”
“Dad, it’s precisely because it’s the apocalypse that making a move is easy,” Preston said, with a pointed edge. “The higher-ups are all too busy scrambling for power right now. They couldn’t care less about the likes of us!”
Victor’s eyes lit up. “You’re right! Leonel’s definitely sitting on a pile of good stuff. He was awfully generous back when we were hammering out that deal. If we could just…”
At that, Victor and Preston exchanged a look and broke into matching sinister smiles.
It was plain as day they meant to double-cross him.
Meanwhile after Leonel brought Autumn back to Villa One, he turned to her apologetically. Tm sorry I didn’t see today’s mess coming either.”
Autumn waved it off, unbothered, and poured herself a cup of coffee. “It’s no big deal. I’m not losing any sleep over it. Any man who’s ever had designs on me doesn’t live to see another sunrise. But I have a feeling your deal with Victor won’t go all that smoothly.”
“Trade what? There’s nothing worth trading with a piece of trash like that.” Leonel slapped the table. “It’s not as if I have to have his shipment.”
“No, no, no. He’s still got plenty of good things on hand, so if it’s worth taking, we take it.” Autumn let out a soft laugh. “As for how we take it, that just depends on our approach. Since Victor’s got himself a death wish, it’d be rude not to grant it-for him and his son both.”
It clicked for Leonel all at once. “So you want to double-cross them?”
“Why not?” Autumn countered.
