Chapter 48 Everyone Has a Scheme

Soon, word of this batch of grain sent a shock through the entire shelter.

Karthmoor’s top two officials and Scott Marsh, the director of the shelter, all came to Leonel, cach hoping to swallow up the entire supply.

Leonel moved among them with practiced ease, and made a point of mentioning in passing that this graj of his was already promised to Victor.

He and Victor had already struck a deal, and even though it hadn’t gone through the exchange, a deal was deal, so he fully intended to honor the contract.

Karthmoor’s top two officials and Scott exchanged a glance, each reading the others’ intentions.

The plan was to wait until Leonel and Victor’s deal was done, then take Victor out, seize his supplies, and grab this batch of grain along with it.

The reason they didn’t dare make a move on Leonel just yet was simple. They still hadn’t gotten a clear read on exactly how much he was holding, and his hundred men were all seasoned pros. On top of that, they couldn’t mobilize the military yet, so for now they held their fire.

If they couldn’t crack the hard nut, they’d go after the soft one instead.

Victor was nothing but a new-money upstart with no real power behind him.

In peacetime, nobody would’ve given his measly little fortune a second look.

But in the apocalypse, a haul of grain this size was more than enough to get a man killed.

Leonel had word sent to Victor that their earlier deal could go ahead after all.

The moment Victor heard, he assumed Leonel was the one caving, that Leonel had gotten scared of him.

Victor gloated to Preston. “You see that? No matter how mighty the outsider is, he still bows to the locals on their own turf! Leonel can throw his weight around out there and act as big and bad as he likes, but so what if he was born a Wright? He’s nothing but a reject his own family kicked to the curb. Doesn’t matter how rich he is. In front of the people who really run this town, he’ll toe the line like a good little boy!”

Preston jumped in right away. “Dad, don’t forget about that guy.”

Victor said smugly, “Relax. Leonel will clean that boy up nice and neat and deliver him right to your bed!” Preston’s whole face lit up, practically bursting with anticipation.

Scott replied, “This is a treasure I’ve been saving for years. I wouldn’t part with it for just anyone. But you’re one of us, Mr. Wright, so of course it’s meant to be shared.”

Leonel said with a smile, “Well then, I won’t say no.”

After a round of business pleasantries, Scott said, “I came by today to advise you, Mr. Wright, to hold off on dealing with Victor for now.”
