Chapter 49 Cleaned Out Overnight
With that, Leonel slid an address across to Autumn.
It was the location where Victor kept his supplies, the one James had dug up.
The stash sat in a bomb shelter just beyond the settlement’s perimeter.
Since it was all stuff nobody could eat or drink, he hadn’t bothered posting any real guard, just a handful of men patrolling back and forth.
Nobody ever went digging through it either.
With no power and no internet, what good was any of that junk anyway?
“Got it.” Autumn took the address and rose to leave. “We move tonight.”
That very evening, Scott did indeed invite Victor over, with Leonel there to keep them company, all of them sharing a meal.
Victor had meant to play a little hard to get, but once Scott was the one asking, he came along like a good boy.
Victor looked at Leonel with nothing but sourness, scowling like the sight of him turned his stomach.
Leonel simply pretended not to notice. After tonight, Victor would have nothing left anyway.
In the dead of night, a dark figure appeared without a sound outside the bomb shelter.
The rain was pounding down hard and fast, and nobody wanted to go out on patrol, so no one noticed the figure at all.
“Come on, come on, drink up, drink up. This miserable weather, when’s it ever going to let up?” someone griped inside. “Everybody else is back at the shelter living it up in big cozy houses, sleeping with hot, pretty girls, and here we are, stuck out here suffering!”
“Drink up, drink up. What can you do? We’re the ones who got on the boss’s bad side. Forget it, at least we’ve got food and drink. Beats being one of those poor suckers breaking their backs on hard labor.”
Exactly, quit complaining. Worst case, we swipe something from inside and sell it off for more booze!” Yeah, right’ It’s all worthless trash. Who knows what the boss even wants with this stuff. Wouldn’t it be sinarter to spend the money on meat and grain? I snuck a laptop out to sell, and nobody would give me even five pounds of gram for it. It’s all junk!”
Isn't that the truth’ These days, who even uses this stuff besides the truly rich? Grain’s the only thing worth anything
“Drink up, drink up.”
Autumn waited patiently, and once the men had drunk themselves into a stupor and she was sure there was no other movement inside, she slipped in without a sound.
The men were sprawled on the floor, dead drunk, unable to so much as keep their eyes open.
That saved her the trouble of dealing with them herself.
The keys to the storeroom were right on them. She fished them out, opened the door, and found row after row of supplies packed so tight they filled the cavern to bursting.
Aside from the industrial goods, there were bolts of fabric and cotton.
And a few hand-operated looms too. Interesting, very interesting.
Autumn waved a hand and swept every last thing in the bomb shelter into her storage space.
Room by room she opened them up, clearing out one after another.
An hour later, the place was picked clean, not a thing left behind.
