Chapter 51 A Roar in the Night
Leonel simply stepped aside. “Go right ahead!”
Scott shot Leonel a look. Leonel gave a subtle, unreadable smile, and Scott was put at ease.
On the surface, Scott was the second-in-command’s man, but by now he was getting too restless to hold back, itching to take control of the whole board himself.
Scott spoke up. “Since Mr. Wright is putting it out there like this, why don’t we go take a look? Gentlemen, after you.”
The three of them marched right into Villa One and looked the place over inside and out.
Everything in the villa that could be shown to outsiders had already been staged ahead of time.
So Leonel and Autumn were the picture of calm.
Sure enough, they searched the whole place and turned up absolutely nothing.
Victor still couldn’t let it go. “But who else besides him would pull something like this?”
“You can’t talk like that, Mr. Victor. You’re a Karthmoorian, born and raised here, the kind of man with deep roots and real clout in these parts. Me? I’m nothing but an outsider, stuck in Karthmoor because I came looking for my cousin. Why would I ever dare make a move on you? And besides, I’m an outsider. I honestly have no clue who you might’ve crossed in the past!” Leonel said, looking all innocent. “You’ve searched, you’ve looked. Can you let us eat our meal in peace now?”
Scott jumped in right away. “Gentlemen, Mr. Wright has always been a strong supporter of the work here at the shelter. He’s put in money, effort, and supplies-and his attitude’s been nothing but decent. So don’t you think maybe we ought to…”
The first-in-command official said, “Since Mr. Wright’s been proven innocent, we won’t intrude any further.”
The second-in-command official gave Leonel a long, hard look and said, “Please don’t take any of this to heart, Mr. Wright. We were only following procedure. We’ll go on working together just as we should.”
“Of course,” Leonel answered, all smiles.
Victor was led away, refusing to accept any of it.
Autumn watched his retreating back and asked Leonel, “Take a guess. What’s going to happen to Victor?”
“Do you even have to ask? A useless piece of trash like that gets tossed out with the garbage, obviously.” Leonel lightly stroked his pinky ring and said offhandedly, “Both him and that worthless son of his. The only place they belong is the dump.”
Autumn smiled.
The cargo ship gets handed over tomorrow. I’m leaving it in your care,” Leonel said to Autumn. “I trust you’ll stash it away so well that nobody will ever find it.”
Autumn gave a soft laugh. “Sounds good.”
Thanks to the downpour, a lot of coastal cities had turned into open sea, deep enough for even a ten- thousand-ton cargo ship to sail through.
So Autumn didn’t have to travel far to reach the handoff site.
The rain was coming down especially hard today, hard enough that you could barely make out someone talking right across from you.
So the handover paperwork went lightning fast. Both sides moved at a breakneck pace, not one word more than necessary; just a rapid-fire flurry of stamping and signing, and the transfer was done.
Once the other side had all cleared out. Autumn sent up a drone, and after checking over and over to be sure no one was around, she finally reached out, scooped up the ten-thousand-ton cargo ship, and tucked it into her storage space.
Autumn gave it a shot. planning to run the ship through her ten-thousandfold duplication.
