Chapter 63 A Fortune in Trust

Leonel leaned hard on that part about never having been in love.

But Autumn didn’t catch it.

She said. “You want Killian to go over to the other hill and work his way inside?”

“Of course not. Killian’s an indispensable bodyguard at my side. He’s in charge of the entire western defense line,” Leonel said.

“Then, what exactly do you want me to do?” Autumn frowned. “Spit it out. Stop dragging it out.”

“I want you to help me move a batch of important supplies off-site.” Leonel finally admitted. “I suspect Westfield Town’s real target isn’t a marriage alliance at all. It’s the classic bait-and-switch-they’re after our supplies.”

“You suspect? Please. That’s about as subtle as a lightbulb in a dark room,” Autumn said, rolling her eyes. “You’re not the type to just take a hit and do nothing. So go on. What’s your plan?”

Leonel laughed. “You really do know me best, Autumn. That’s right. I plan to play along and turn it right back on them. Since Westfield Town has the nerve to scheme against us, they can’t blame me for turning the tables on their women. I’ll be honest with you-I’m not content to hole up on one hill and live like a rat.”

At last, Leonel let his ambition show. “Like you said, if this world’s breaking into rival territories, why can’t I be one of the powers? If I want to win people’s loyalty, my group has to keep growing. I’ve got over a hundred people here, all young and strong. Add another hundred-some women, and won’t our numbers keep climbing, generation after generation? Every one of them would be my own bloodline. Fifteen years from now, when the apocalypse ends, what I’ll have in my hands is a huge, tightly bound force. With people and supplies both, why wouldn’t I be able to rule my own territory?”

“So you’ve set your sights on the young women of Westfield Town?” Autumn frowned and shot back, “How do you know they’d be willing to walk away from Westfield and follow you? And the extreme cold is coming soon. In an environment like this, having kids doesn’t strike me as a smart idea.”

“That’s why I’m asking for your help.” Leonel looked at her, his gaze intense. “You’ll help me, right?”

Autumn didn’t answer.

“Of course, you don’t have to give me an answer right now. For now, all I want is for you to hold onto some important supplies we don’t need at the moment. Autumn, you’re the person I trust most.” His gaze stayed fixed on her, intense and unwavering.

Autumn toyed with the lighter in her hand. After a moment, she said, “Leonel, you’ve really got guts.”

Leonel burst out laughing, then looked at her with total sincerity. “Because I trust my own judgment, and your character is beyond question. Even if you and I go our separate ways someday, you’d never pocket a single scrap of my supplies.”

Fine. Since you trust me that much.” Autumn smiled. “Then I’ll hold onto them for you for now. But let’s clear-my storage fee is non-negotiable. I never do business at a loss.”

Leonel took Autumn deep into the cave.

Only then did she realize he’d practically hollowed out the entire hill. No wonder the place had been rumbling nonstop these past few days.

“This is half my fortune.” Leonel opened a door, revealing an enormous stockpile inside.

Autumn glanced up without thinking, and the whole sight left her stunned.

The cavern ran about 108,000 square feet and was 30 feet high.

It was crammed to bursting with the most basic necessities-grain, water, medicine, clothes.
