Chapter 64 Calm Before the Storm
Autumn went from stunned at the start to numb by the end.
Apparently, this was only half of Leonel’s assets. The other half was stashed somewhere else.
Just think how much nerve the man had.
All on a single hunch, he’d genuinely sold off everything he owned and turned it all into a mountain of supplies.
And now? That gamble had paid off.
After they’d looked through the last warehouse, Leonel handed Autumn the keys. “You remembered all the passcodes, right? I’ll pass the word that from five minutes after I leave until sunrise tomorrow, nobody comes near here. You can clear it all out without a worry.”
Autumn smiled and nodded, watching him go.
She had to admit it. Right then, Leonel looked ridiculously cool to her.
The second he was gone, Autumn opened every door and, with a wave of her hand, swept all the supplies inside into her space.
The amount stacked in those warehouses was flat-out insane. A sea of supplies.
Even if she never went scavenging again, just using gold for ten-thousandfold duplication would be enough to feed a city of a million.
Damn.
She was getting fired up herself.
Even though all she’d wanted in this life was to keep her head down and survive until the apocalypse ended.
Once it was all done, Autumn quietly returned to her cave, ate when she wanted, drank when she wanted, and acted like nothing had happened at all.
And Leonel carried on as if he’d never handed half his fortune to Autumn for safekeeping.
Only James knew that the bond between his boss and Autumn had grown a good deal tighter.
At that very moment, on the neighboring hill.
Zain and Silas were eating together and trading information.
Those Westfield Town people really can’t sit still. Now, they’ve set their sights on the group next door.” Zain said Chief Evander’s ambition is no small thing.
Silas said. “No small thing? It’s a hell of a lot bigger than that. That group next door is obviously not to be messed with. Evander thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room with all his scheming, but to them, he’s jus! wo-bit clown, Mark my words, it won’t be long before the whole town pays the price for their choices.”
Zain gave a self-mocking laugh. “Who cares? If they want to get themselves killed, let them. We just look after our own.”
Silas paused, then asked, “How long until the Deep Freeze?”
“By my count, about half a month,” Zain answered. “We still don’t have enough firewood stored up.”
“I found a fishing hole out there today. Plenty of fish in it,” Silas said.
“Seriously?” Zain’s eyes lit up instantly. “And you’re just handing me something this valuable?”
“Since our two groups agreed to work together, we ought to show some good faith,” Silas said, feigning offense. “Besides, I trust you, Zain.”
