Chapter 66 Dark Plans
The furious Benjamin calmed down in an instant.
Willow gave her son a light smack, pretending to scold him. “What nonsense are you spouting? Even if your big brother got word early and stocked up on all those supplies without telling the family, he’s still your brother.”
That little jab landed right on cue.
Benjamin’s temper flared right back up. “So, he really is out to ruin me. I was wondering why he suddenly dumped every asset he had. So that’s what it was for. His mother’s cheap blood-no good was ever going to come of it. I’m his father. What’s his is mine.”
Willow and Wyatt traded a quick glance.
Willow patted Benjamin’s back and said gently, “Talk it out with him, father to son. Don’t lose your temper Leonel was so devoted to Grandpa. He’ll be just as devoted to you. Right now, he simply can’t swallow his pride.”
“Yeah, Dad, I’m really worried about Leonel out there on his own. Didn’t they say the satellites up in the sky are about to come down? Once communications cut out, what if we can’t reach him at all?” Wyatt said with put-on concern. “We really ought to get him back as soon as we can.”
Benjamin nodded. “Wyatt, you’re really the most devoted one.”
“Dad, when Leonel comes home, I’ll honor you and Mom right alongside him!” Wyatt was already 18 years old, but he still played it like he was eight, and it had Benjamin beaming.
On Leonel’s end, the moment he hung up, he had James look into it. “Something’s off. When people act there’s always a reason. Go find out what they’re really after.” strange,
“Yes, sir,” James said.
Before long, James was back with what he’d dug up.
One look, and Leonel laughed out of pure anger.
“Good. Very good. Just fucking wonderful.” Leonel slammed the report onto the table, disgust all over his face. “They want to bleed me white. They hate my guts, but they still want to milk me for every last drop!”
James dropped his eyes to the file on the desk. Written plainly across it: The Wrights plan to form a marriage alliance with the second-in-command of the southwestern shelter by marrying their eldest son into the woman’s family.
James nearly felt sick himself.
No wonder his boss never talked about his family. Who could stomach something this vile?
Leonel said with a sneer, “What, Wyatt’s not fit to put on display, so now they think of me?”
“They’re probably not just after you. They’re after the supplies in your hands too,” James said. Communications haven’t gone down yet, so it’d be no trouble for the Wrights to find out what you’ve been up to at the Karthmoor shelter. You donated that much, and traded that much on top of it. Never mind the rest-how much did we clear during the extreme heat and drought just selling water? And flipping protective suits? That was pure profit.”
“Exactly. That old bastard is dreaming if he thinks it’ll happen.” Leonel let out a cold laugh. “At this point, I’m honestly hoping the satellites fall faster. Then, we’ll see how he keeps playing the man above everyone else.”
The moment he finished, Leonel told James, “Move the supplies we’ve got stored outside back here as fast as you can. It’s not safe out there anymore.”
James nodded at once. “Yes, sir. I’ve already had them suspend all outside trades for now. We made a killing this time. This much is enough to keep us alive for several lifetimes.”
