Chapter 67 The Wedding Gift

In all honesty, Autumir was good-looking, but only good-looking. She was a long way from the kind of beauty that stops a room.

But there was something about her, a pull, a kind of magic, that people just couldn’t ignore. It made uljem want to watch her, to figure her out.

She always dressed androgynously, wore her hair short, and even her too-sharp jawline made it clear she’d never been a meek, yes-ma’am kind of woman.

Leonel wanted to get closer, but he was afraid of what rejection might do to him.

“What are you thinking about?” Autumn caught him staring at her in silence and asked, “Oh right, how’s that bodyguard of yours coming along?”

“You mean Killian?” Leonel picked the thread right up. “Things are heating up between him and Willa. And not just him. Quite a few of the men have gotten close with women from Westfield Town.”

“You’re really not worried they’ll stab you in the back?” Autumn asked.

“Nope.” Leonel smiled. “The people I picked were all chosen with care and tested hard. I know you’re about to say that people are unpredictable and you can never truly know someone, but at least for right now, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

Autumn nodded.

“Autumn. I’m going to make it. I will.” Leonel’s voice dropped low and burning. “I’ll prove myself.”

Meanwhile, Killian and Willa were making out in a freshly dug little cave.

The cave was rough as hell, plainly a rush job. Apart from a nest-like spot inside, there was basically nothing to it.

There were plenty of little caves like it, all dug by the young crowd, specifically as places to fool around.

“Killian, we’ve already gone this far. When are you going to marry me?” Willa nestled into his arms and whined sweetly.

“You want to get married?” Killian held her lazily, lit a cigarette, and blew a ring of smoke that veiled his eyes. No one could tell what he was thinking.

“Isn’t that obvious? I’m a good girl, and I gave myself to you. You’re not planning to duck out on responsibility, are you?” Willa said in a pouty little voice.

How could I?” Killian chuckled. “I’d like a wife, kids, and a warm home too. Who could say no to a life like that

Only then did Willa relax, tracing little circles on his chest. “My mom says even though it’s the apocalypse, there still has to be a proper wedding gift.”

“Sure. How much?” Killian asked.

“What good is money now? It’s just useless paper. A pound of cash won’t even trade for a pound of rice.” Willa pouted. “My mom says our family isn’t asking for much. A hundred pounds of rice, 50 pounds of flour, and 50 pounds of charcoal will do. So what do you say…”

That’s all? Fine. No problem,” Killian said lightly. “But make one thing crystal clear to your family. Once you marry over here, you’re one of us. You don’t go back to Westfield Town anymore.”

Willa sat bolt upright, movements sharp, her face full of anger. “What’s that supposed to mean? Are you buying me outright? I’m a person, not livestock! I can’t even visit my own family?”

Killian didn’t seem fazed. He dressed slowly and said, “Go home and talk it over with them. If they agree. I’ll bring the wedding gift over.”
