Autumn had all the supplies she bought delivered to the alley behind the shopping center. She told the workers someone would come pick them up later.
As soon as they left, she waved her hand and tossed everything into her storage space.
Her storage space was now as big as a stadium. These supplies barely took up any room at all.
She could organize everything later. After all, time would be the one thing she had plenty of in the future.
Just as she was about to head home, her phone rang.
Autumn stared at the caller ID for a long time. Right before the call went to voicemail, she finally remembered something. She had a job.
"Hello..."
"Autumn! Why didn't you come to work today? Do you even want this job? If you don't, then quit! Plenty of people would love to have your position—"
Autumn covered one ear and held the phone away from her head, saving herself from getting yelled at.
Work?
What work?
She was busy stockpiling supplies. Who had time to work?
If her previous self had been the old her, she would have apologized right away and gone back to working like a machine.
But now...
Autumn looked at the gold bars inside her storage space and smiled. "Boss, I quit."
There was a long pause. Then came a voice full of disbelief. "Autumn, think this through. Besides me, who else is going to pay you this well? I'm giving you one hour. Get back here and start working!"
Without waiting for an answer, he hung up.
Autumn blinked. She decided to go anyway. She could quit in person and collect the rest of her paycheck.
She worked at a Cajun restaurant, mostly helping in the kitchen.
She chopped vegetables, prepared ingredients, and handled small tasks for the head chef.
She never officially cooked at the stove, but when the chef got busy, she sometimes stepped in and made simple dishes.
In her previous life, those cooking skills had helped her survive the early days of the apocalypse.
The moment she walked into the restaurant, before she could say a word, her boss shoved a mop into her hands. "Why are you standing around? Can't you find something to do on your own? Hurry up and mop the entrance! Customers will be here soon! You're young, but you move like a damn block of wood!"
As her boss grumbled and complained, Autumn didn't feel annoyed at all. Instead, she felt strangely nostalgic.
The man had a sharp tongue, but he wasn't a bad person.
Five years ago, when Autumn was seventeen, she graduated from high school. She hadn't gotten into a top university. The only school that accepted her was a small private college.
But the tuition was sky-high. The orphanage had already stretched itself to the limit just to get her through high school.
Even though Phoebe promised again and again that she would find a way to raise the money, Autumn chose to give up.
She packed a small bag, turned around, and left for Karthmoor.
With only a high school diploma, she had no chance of standing out in the job market.
Even an entry-level customer service job wanted applicants with a bachelor's degree.
When she had nowhere left to go, after three days without food, she collapsed on the street from hunger.
It was the owner of this restaurant who found her, took her in, and gave her a job.
The restaurant provided room and board. Every now and then, the owner would buy her a couple of new outfits and call it an employee benefit. She saved every penny of her paycheck. After five years, she had enough for the down payment on an old house.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say the owner had changed her life.
Even though Autumn was exhausted and sleepy, she still took the mop he handed her and went to clean the floor by the front door.
