Reborn Cave Queen of the End Times novel Chapter 8

"What do you mean by that?" David asked.

"I'm quitting my job," Autumn said. "I came into some money. Before the apocalypse hits, I need to stock up on supplies."

She looked at him seriously. David was the only person she could truly open up to. "You need to believe me."

The hand holding his cigarette shook harder and harder. "Autumn," he said in a trembling voice, "tell me the truth. Do you know something?"

Autumn hesitated for a long time. She had already told David the biggest secret about her storage space. Telling him the rest didn't seem to matter anymore.

Besides, they might never see each other again.

She finally spoke. "David, I wasn't lying when I said I escaped death. I came back from another life. In my last life, I spent 15 years trying to survive. There was drought, megastorms, deep freezes, insect swarms, toxic fog, acid rain, sandstorms, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Almost everyone on Earth died." She paused. "No. Everyone died. I was one of the last 2,000 survivors. But even we couldn't survive the final meteor strike."

David was shaking all over. He couldn't even hold his cigarette anymore. "What about me?" he asked. "When did I die?"

"At the beginning of the disasters. A group of raiders looking for supplies beat you to death. I buried you."

David suddenly burst into laughter. "Hahahaha! So I died that early? That's pathetic!" He laughed until he started coughing violently. "I bet I was trying to help somebody again, wasn't I?"

Autumn said nothing.

David wiped his face hard and pounded his chest. "Thank you for telling me all this. Autumn, what's your plan?"

"I'm going to gather supplies in Karthmoor for now. Then I'll head to Zaltmoor. There are lots of mountains there, and resources are plentiful. Once I find a place to settle down, I'll keep moving west and collect as many kinds of supplies as possible." She looked at him sincerely. "David, if you have somewhere better to go, you should leave while there's still time."

"Where would I go?" David said with a bitter smile. "I'm alone, just like you. No family. No one was waiting for me. Autumn, if you don't mind an old guy with slow legs, I'll follow you from now on. Of course, if you think I'd just slow you down—"

"David, besides Phoebe, you're the second person who's ever been kind to me for no reason. As long as you trust me." A thought crossed her mind. Trying to survive alone in the apocalypse was almost impossible.

She was an ordinary person. Sure, she was a little stronger and could fight a little better than most people, but that was it.

She wasn't like the heroines in stories who could defeat anything in their way. She didn't know physics or engineering. She couldn't build wind turbines or invent machines to make life easier. She wasn't a doctor who could save people from the brink of death.

If she wanted to survive, she needed allies.

In her previous life, she had worked with many groups. Together, they had survived one dark period after another.

David's character was solid. His only weakness was that he had a soft heart.

If he still couldn't break that habit in the apocalypse, they could always part ways later.

Autumn had never been the kind of person who refused to change.

She held out her hand. "David, welcome to my team."

David shook her hand. "Don't worry. I'll listen to you. Whatever you need me to do, I'll do it."

Then he grinned. "But I've got an even better idea." He tossed his cigarette butt into the trash. "If the apocalypse is really coming, no supply is more important than food. People have to eat. And we've already got a restaurant..."

Autumn's eyes lit up instantly.

"Leave this to me," David said, waving a hand. "I guarantee I'll make enough food to feed the two of us for the rest of our lives!" Then he shouted, "Go put up the sign outside. We're closed today. No—forget today. We're closed from now on!"

"Got it!" Autumn answered and ran outside.

She had planned to quit her job, but now there was no need. She had pulled David onto her team, and they could stockpile supplies together.

David moved fast and made decisions even faster. If he said the restaurant was closing, then it was closing. He trusted Autumn completely.
