Chapter 75 The Commander

Timothee’s eyes dimmed. “We really did everything we could. So when those people cursed us out, we didn’t say a word back.”

“This isn’t on you,” Leonel said, trying to steady him. “What about your commander?”

Timothee hesitated, then let out a sigh. “Honestly, we still had contact with Jyncrest a few days back. But yesterday, everything cut off. The carrier pigeons we sent didn’t even get far before freezing solid into little ice blocks. We switched to radio, but nobody answered. The commander thinks something’s happened in Jyncrest. They probably can’t spare us any attention anymore.

“So the commander just kept us on rescue missions. Save who we can. But our food stores aren’t endless either. Once this batch runs out, who knows when we’ll see more.”

“Your losses haven’t been too severe, have they?” Autumn asked.

“It is severe… really severe.” Timothee said sadly. “My captain gave me his own coat, then froze to death right in front of me.”

His eyes reddened as he spoke. “And it wasn’t just my team. Everyone else took the same hit. When the temperature crashed, we were all still out in it. Not enough cold weather gear on hand. Plenty froze to death, plenty more caught frostbite. If two-thirds of our fighting strength is still standing, that already counts as lucky.

“But as long as we’re wearing this uniform for one more day, we owe that day everything it means. The commander said even if we freeze down to the last man standing, the mission still gets carried out.” Timothee wiped at his eyes, refusing to let the tears fall.

At this temperature, crying could genuinely kill you.

“You handed over every bit of support gear to the people below and kept nothing for yourselves?” Autumn asked, frowning.

“I…” Timothee turned his face away, awkward.

Autumn let out a cold laugh. “The refugees you rescued stole your winter gear too, didn’t they?”

Timothee lowered his head, silent.

“Hah. Bunch of ingrates.” Autumn rolled her eyes. “What’s even the point of saving people like that?”

Timothee answered weakly. “They’re still civilians. We still have to save them.”

Autumn rolled her eyes again.

Leonel asked. “The people you rescued, where’d they all end up? The shelter?”

Some went to the shelter. Some still refused, took the supplies, and went off looking for somewhere else.” Timother said “We didn’t have enough vehicles to move everyone to the shelter, so there wasn’t much more we could do

Autumn nodded, understanding perfectly.

People like that weren’t exactly harmless in the apocalypse.

But they were the ones who made it to the end.

She’d been one of them once too.
