Keith’s presence looms behind me like a fatal dream. Even though he’s silent as I guide him and Jace to the second level of the main house he is impossible to ignore.
I take him to a door at the end of the hallway.
“This will be your room,” I say neutrally and then point to the one beside you. ” And Jace you can stay here. There is an adjoining door should you both need it.”
“Thoughtful,” Jace comments, giving Keith a look I can’t decipher.
“Just making sure you feel comfortable. I know Beta’s like to stay with their Alpha’s during travel.”
“Smart female,” Jace smiles.
I frown. Normally, I let comments like this pass. Now I know it’s the same as staying silent. The same as letting life lead me instead of taking hold of my own life.
That is not what this second chance is about.
I know what happens when I’m agreeable.
“Just smart,” I correct him.
“Excuse me?” His eyes are somewhere between amused and confused.
“You specified female. So, you’re either impressed because I’m female, which leads me to believe you have a low opinion of them or you think I need a reminder of my sex, and I can assure you I don’t.”
Jace’s eyes go wide and he looks a bit guilty. “I don’t have a low opinion of females.”
“Really,” I say, easily opening his room door for him. “Then I’d recommend you don’t speak so carelessly next time. If I were my sister, you would have found yourself beneath her boot.”
Keith’s chuckle is rich, alluring.
I hate it.
“Yeah Jace, you should think before you speak,” he nudges Beta’s shoulder with his.
Jace rubs the back of his head thoroughly chastised. “Listen Hope, I didn’t mean anything by it-”

I raise my hand to stop him, softening my voice so he knows I’m not upset. “I know you didn’t. I just figured I may as well call you out before someone else did. Help you save face
and all.”
The humor is back in his warm brown eyes. “First Keith and now me, I had no idea what a bleeding heart you are.”
“I try,” I joke, still keeping my eyes from the Alpha. “Now go put your things away and I’ll take you around the grounds.”
“Actually,” Jace said, taking Keith’s bag from him. “I think I’ll stay in and take a nap. I’m kind of tired from the trip.”
I do my best not to let my emotion show on my face as he closes his door and I’m left alone
with Keith.
“Where to next?” Keith asks.
“We’ll start with the common grounds,” I say, moving ahead of him.
Keith keeps in step with me as I ramble about the grounds, taking him through the pack house, the individual family houses, the shops and the running ground.
I fill the space with words to prevent myself from having to speak to him directly or look at him. It works for half the time.
However, when I’m leading him to the edge of the forest to show him the training fields he says, “You’re avoiding me,” he says.
I stop. “This is a tour. Not a conversation, Alpha Keith.”
“Call me Keith,” he corrects.
}
“Alpha Keith suits me just fine,” I say, doing the best to ignore his intoxicating scent.
He studies me for a moment, the intensity of his gaze makes me feel like a watermelon that’s been burst open. Like he can see all the soft tender parts of me.
“You don’t feel it?” his knowing eyes analyze my face daring me to lie to him.
I keep my face cold and try anyway. “Feel what?”
He steps closer. “Don’t play dumb. We both know that’s something you aren’t. The question is why don’t you want to acknowledge this?”
