9.I have a boyfriend2

Back off, Keith,” I snap.

He stalks towards me and I have to lift my head to hold his stare. No. Not until you admit it.”

Admit what?!I huff, frustrated.

He knows. Goddess, he knows.

He snorts close to the small fraction of space between our bodies. My pulse skyrockets as he inhales. His eyes flash wolf and for a moment I’m captured in their snare.

His voice is gravel when he speaks. My wolf is crawling out of my skin to get to you. And from the looks of it your wolf recognizes mine as well. They know. You know. There is no pretending your way out of this.

I’m not pretending anything,” I say quickly, too quickly. You’re overthinking this.”

Keith runs a tender of my hair between his fingers. Am I?

I turn, forcing a light laugh. Yes. You’ve been here five minutes and you’re already jumping to conclusions?

Mmm, and what would you call a conclusion based on fact?

A fact only you seem to feel?I challenge her to just believe the lie and make it easier on us

both.

Look at me,” he orders.

My wolf whines, the pull of his dominance wearing on her resolve.

Why?

I want to see your eyes when you tell me you’re not my fated mate,he says bluntly.

There it is.

I turn to him.

His eyes lock with mine. Too steady. Too knowing.

He thinks he has me. That he’s won and I will just submit to fate. But I’ve seen where fate takes me, where he leaves me.

There is always more than one choice.

Does it matter if you are?I say surprising him.

So, you admit I’m your mate?he asks, his brows rise slightly, hopeful.

You are. But I have a boyfriend,” I blurt.

Goddess help me.

I rack my mind to try and think my way out of this idiot reaction. Why the hell would I say

that?

His mouth twitches, like he’s trying not to react. But I can see the flare of possessiveness.

That so?

Yes.I can’t backtrack now.

Maybe the presence of another male will be enough to get him to give me some space. I’m not dumb enough to think it will work forever. Males as dominant as him wouldn’t be able to stand aside and let another male claim what they view as theirs, but it could be me time.

He’s inconsequential. The mate bond is undeniable. You were made for me. Deep down, you

know it.

I don’t believe it’s stronger than a bond you choose for yourself.I keep my chin up.

His expression tightens. Right.

I duck beneath him and continue down the path with him at my heel. We reach the back field.

Come on. Training field’s this way,I c**k my head to the side knowing Keith won’t just let this conversation go.

Bens on the mat in the center of the field, tank top soaked with sweat, fists moving fast. A few others are practicing around him.

I don’t hesitate. I jog over and grab his arm. Benny!

He startles. “Hey-

Play along,” I whisper to him before focusing on the approaching Alpha. Then louder I say, This is Alpha Keith,I say, smiling brightly. Keith, meet my boyfriendBenjamin. Son of Beta Tucker.

Ben looks between us, confused. I squeeze his arm and he gives and award smile before shooting me a look that means we’ll be having a conversation later.

Pleased to meet you, Alpha Keith. I’ve heard great things about you.”

Keith stands eye to eye with Ben and impressive feat and one which has Keith’s wolf flashing

in his eyes.

Keith’s eyes darken. Ah, so you’re the boyfriend?

He says that word like a curse.

Ben blinks. “Yeah. Uhright. That’s me.”

I glare at him from the side. He clears his throat.

We’ve been together for a while,” I add. Grew up together, actually. Right, Ben?

Ben glances at Keith, then back to me. “Yeah. Completely.”

That so?Keith steps forward, just enough to make Ben shift his weight. “Funny. Your wolf doesn’t seem verybonded.

Ben narrows his eyes. “What’s that supposed to mean?

I can see Ben trying to put the pieces together. Wondering what the hell I just dragged him

into.

Keith smiles. It’s cold, hard. “I just expected moreease between the two of you. You look stiff Ben.

He walks around Ben, sizing him up openly. Waves of aggression and dominance roll off of him. If it weren’t for Ben’s warrior training, he would have either crumpled under the pressure or been goaded into a fight. Luckily, Ben does neither.

I also find it odd that she doesn’t wear your scent,” Keith says as if he’s uncovering a

mystery.

Not everything’s about showing off,” I cut in, voice sharp.

Keith doesn’t look away. Sometimes it’s about instinct.”

A shiver runs down my spine and the familiar urge to press myself into him takes hold.

I toss that thought in a mental box where it belongs, holding on to Ben like he’s my lifeline, because he is.
