Keith
Mate.
That one word slammed into me the moment I stepped onto Blue Rock Pack territory.
The force of it was so strong it was as if my wolf and Lycan merged for a moment.
I hate to say it, but Jace might have been right in insisting I see the healer, Emma.
It took no time to confirm that Hope was me fated mate.
I told Jace as much which was why he pulled the I’m tired stunt to give me a moment alone
with her.
How was I supposed to know it would all go to shit so thoroughly.
The air is thick with pine and distant rain, but all I smell is her–warmth, sunlight, and something wild I can’t name.
She’s standing by the large warrior male, Ben.
Her boyfriend.
I almost choke on the word.
I want to choke him. To drag him into the ring and challenge him for her like my primal self–demands. To show him what happens to any male that thinks they can have what’s
mine.
My wolf and Lycan call for blood.
Thank the Goddess I have a semblance of control left.
What’s wrong, Jace projects inside my mind.
He must sense my heightened emotions.
Hope has a boyfriend, I reply not seeing the point in trying to hide it.
If anyone can help me come back from the edge Jace can.
Oh Fuck. Keith don’t do anything stupid.
She’s my fucking mate. Am I supposed to just be happy some other male has his hands all over
her.

Just slow down and think. If she cares about the male challenging him isn’t going to do you any
favors.
It would make me feel better.
Amusement dances along with his words. I’m sure it would. But you know what would make you feel better… claiming your mate.
I shift my gaze from the asshole to Hope. Her hair tied back in a lazy knot, allowing the delicate features of her face, her small nose and full lips to shine. She is beautiful even in a faded T–shirt and well–worn cargos.
I hate that Jace is right.
Ours, my wolf and Lycan growl, merging again for a moment as their desires align.
She is, I confirm. But we have to be smart about this.
Do I have to go over there? Jace asks.
She looks at me, her expression indifferent. Polite. Smug even as she holds the bulky, blonde
warrior.
No. I’ve got this, I reply.
Her eyes slide past me like I’m no one special.
But that’s a lie. It has to be.
Something is wrong.
“Why isn’t her wolf reacting?” I murmur to myself, trying to hide the unease twisting in my
gut.
“What was that?” Hope asks.
“Nothing. Is the tour over?” I say, needing to get her away from the male.
If I have to play the Alpha who needs an escort to his room to do it then that’s what I will do.
My wolf paces, agitated. She doesn’t feel it. That’s not possible.
My Lycan snorts on agreement.
Their essence pulses in sync within me. Ever since the ascension, both essences have gotten closer. There are times when they feel like one mind.
Damn I really need to see Emma.

My beasts are correct though and not just because I want them to be. I heard the hitch in her voice, saw her wolf reach for mine when I closed the distance between us.
And when she mentioned this boyfriend of hers, it felt like an excuse.
She smiles at Ben like her world revolves around him. Yet he looks at her with a subtle fondness and a bit of confusion.
Is he dating her to advance his station?
A spike of rage ignites at the thought of any male trying to use Hope.
“Yup. This is everything,” Hope says. “I can take you back to your room if you’re ready now.”
There is far too much enthusiasm in her voice.
Is she trying to get rid of me?
“That would be best. I have an early appointment with Emma.”
