Keith

The moment my eyes open, I sit up.

There is none of the grogginess I expected when Emma mentioned Hypnosis. I feel around in my head and find my beasts tired but intact.

“How are you feeling?”

“Alright. Did you make any progress on your exam?”

She smiles in a motherly, comforting way. “Well we have some good leads and your beast seems aware of the merge happening but the dreams are still something that eludes us.”

Great, we’ll at least have that one thing under control.

“So what’s my prognosis?”

“Do you remember when your wolf first emerged?”

“Yes I was eight years old. It was like suddenly someone else was sharing my mind. At the same time there were all these physical changes in my strength, my heightened senses and metaphysical instincts.”

“Exactly. Well in your case, with your lineage, your Lycan has not only emerged as a separate entity but it appears as though this is just a transition phase into something I don’t believe has been seen before. That’s why I want to contact my colleague.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Your wolf and Lycan are changing, turning into something not either but both. They are like two halves of the same entity and this maturing, or the merging you’re experiencing,is the start of that.

Shock courses through me.

My wolf snorts in a way that suspiciously resembles a laugh while my Lycan huffs in

annoyance.

“Are you trying to tell me my beasts are going to be one permanently?”

Humans know nothing, he growls.

A little heads up would have been nice.

You don’t trust instincts, my wolf adds.

Sometimes. Not enough, my wolf snipes.

Much to learn, my Lycan agrees.

I almost laugh before I realize Emma is still in the room watching me grip with my beasts.

She only smiles at me when I give her an apologetic look.

“Yes they are going to be in the form they were always supposed to be.”

“Why didn’t it happen earlier?”

“From what I understand it was to prove your mortal half. The power from the converging would have been so strong it ran the risk of driving your young mind into insanity. You would have gone feral.”

“So when will they merge…” I let the question hang.

Emma’s stare takes on an edge I can’t decipher. “You will be the most powerful shifter walking the earth.”

“That complicates things,” I say carefully.

In more ways than she can possibly understand. The Alpha King won’t be happy to learn about this new status, in fact, there are many that wouldn’t either. That’s why we keep our pack so private, why we have secrets that don’t go beyond Lotus pack land.

I have to find out where Emma stands because she now holds information that can ruin me. While the Royals and my family bear no ill will, it is no secret that the reason they keep such a close eye on my family is because of the power in our blood.

Our Lycan blood makes us a threat to them, a threat then keep in eyesight in case we ever become upset with our place in the royal hierarchy.

The development of my Lycan and the impending birth of an animal that is both will divide loyalties.

Some will want to follow me because it is in our nature to follow the strongest among us, others will choose loyalty to the crown and forever see my existence and the existence of any offspring I have as a direct opposition.

This merging of my beast has to be kept a secret until I can master the power it comes with.

I hold Emma’s gaze, letting my wolf show me my eyes so that I don’t miss expression.

I keep my face neutral, not showing her the relief in my face at her words.
