REBORN My Second Life I Became The Villianess novel Nysa and Dario Valteri Chapter 130

I sat down on the chair and looked out at the glittering city lights. I could hear my phone ringing inside, but I didn't make any attempt to go get it. I just let it ring and ring. I just sat there on the balcony, watching the orange and purple streaks of the sunset bleed into the dark navy skyline, continuing to sip my wine straight from the glass. The apartment was dead quiet, except for the faint hum of the city traffic far below.

My phone didn't stop ringing. I knew without looking that it had to be Dario, along with everyone else who had inevitably gotten dragged into whatever family panic he had started.

There was a sharp, quiet tap against the balcony door. When I turned my head, Jax was standing right there on the other side, holding out my vibrating phone toward me with a completely blank expression.

I set my wine glass down, stood up, and slid the glass door open just enough to take the phone from his hand. I unlocked the screen for a second, my eyes scanning the notifications. Fifty missed calls. Dario, Elena, Ella, Bianca, Carlton. My family tree was apparently going into complete meltdown mode.

"They're trying to find you," Jax said, his voice level and steady as he looked down at me. I tossed the phone back onto the side table like it was a piece of trash. "They can try. Just make sure no one finds me," I said.

Jax gave a firm nod. "Consider it done, Boss." He turned on his heel and walked back inside the penthouse, leaving me alone with the night air.

Standing there for another long moment, I listened to the phone vibrate itself silent before it started ringing all over again. A sudden spike of stubbornness hit me. I picked the phone back up, swiped to answer, and called Dario right back, putting it on speaker so I didn't even have to hold it to my ear.

He answered on the very first ring. He probably had the screen gripped tightly in his palm the entire time. "Where are you, kitten?" Dario asked softly, his voice was tight with a mix of exhaustion and underlying panic.

"I want to be alone. Don't bother me," I said, keeping my tone flat.

"You're really thinking I'm bothering you? I'm worried sick about what you did, and you won't even tell me truthfully if you have Nysa hidden away somewhere," he said, his frustration was bleeding through his words.

"I already told you the truth, but you won't believe me," I fired back, my grip tightening around the wine glass I had picked back up. "If I wanted to lie, I could have lied about Caroline, but I didn't. I told you exactly what I did, and I told you what I would do if I found Nysa. If you can't believe my word for something as simple as this, then I don't think we have anything left to talk about."

I didn't give him a single second to reply, I swiped the screen and ended the call. Then, I powered the phone off, letting the screen go black. I didn't need or want any stress at the moment, I just wanted to be alone for a while.

I finished off the entire bottle of wine while the cool wind whipped my hair around my face. By the time nine o'clock rolled around, the alcohol and the sheer emotional exhaustion had finally caught up with me. I walked back inside, ditched my shoes, crawled into the master bed, and fell into a heavy, dreamless sleep almost instantly.

When I woke up the next morning, a dull, throbbing headache was beating against my temples. For a few disoriented minutes, I lay there staring up at the unfamiliar ceiling, not entirely sure where I was before my brain caught up and reminded me I was safely tucked away in my own private penthouse.

I stayed stretched out under the covers for most of the morning, letting the silence wrap around me. Around eleven, I finally dragged myself out of bed, stripped off my sleep clothes, and headed into the bathroom for a long, hot shower. The steam cleared my head a little bit, washing away some of the leftover grogginess.

When I walked out into the kitchen, I noticed a white paper bag sitting right on the marble counter. I walked over and peeked inside there was a hot breakfast sandwich and a pastry, and the packaging was still slightly warm to the touch. It had to be Jax. He always anticipated things like this without needing to be asked.

I brewed a fresh cup of coffee, set it down next to the food, and actually sat down to eat. My stomach had been practically empty since yesterday, and the food helped settle the last of the morning nausea.
