Jasmine Sterling acknowledged her and explained, "He’s a friend from out of town."
At this, Miss Warner gave Randall Jennings a meaningful look and asked tentatively, "A friend from out of town, you say? Is he planning to stay here?"
"No, Miss Warner. He’s just here for a little while. He arrived right before you did."
Jasmine Sterling quickly denied it and poured two glasses of water, inviting Miss Warner and Mr. Warner to sit down.
Only when Mr. Warner sat down did he finally tear his eyes away from Jasmine Sterling. He shot Randall Jennings a wary glance, looked around the house, and finally spoke his first words. "This place is pretty small. I heard from Miss Warner that you have three children? How do you all fit?"
Jasmine Sterling was taken aback for a moment before she realized he was speaking to her. She replied, "It’s not a large place, but we’re used to it. Now that my two daughters are off to college in Lorcain, the house actually feels a bit empty."
Hearing this, Miss Warner quickly chimed in. "Mr. Warner, didn’t I tell you? Jasmine’s three children are all incredible. The eldest daughter is at the Lorcain Institute of Technology, and the second is at The Film Academy. They’re all very bright kids, just like their mother."
’Matchmakers are good at saying such pleasant things.’ It was obvious Miss Warner had already told him about Jasmine’s situation. He must have been interested enough to come and meet her in person.
Mr. Warner’s body seemed to shrink into a ball when he sat, as if he were underdeveloped. Yet, he insisted on feigning a profound and serious expression. His overall image and demeanor were completely discordant and quite unappealing.
The way he looked at her, in particular, struck Jasmine Sterling as incredibly rude. It was as if he were staring her down, sizing her up like an object.
The man didn’t respond to Miss Warner, either. He just looked at Jasmine Sterling and asked, "Are you aware of my circumstances?"
Before Jasmine could speak, he arrogantly tilted his chin up and continued on his own, "Let me give you the details about my situation. I’m from Fornan, and I’m fifty-one years old. I know I might look younger, but I assure you, I am fifty-one."
Jasmine Sterling: ?
’Younger? Where?’
Mr. Warner continued, "Miss Warner said you’re forty-four? I normally have requirements for my partner’s age—preferably not over forty. It’s difficult to have children when they’re too old, after all. But Miss Warner said you’ve given birth to three kids, so I think you must be quite blessed in the fertility department. You also look younger than you really are and have a good disposition. And for me, disposition is the most important thing."
By this point, Jasmine Sterling’s expression had already started to shift slightly. But with an elder like Miss Warner present, she held her tongue.
Mr. Warner just kept talking. "I also have a child, a son, not quite thirty. He’s currently in charge of our family’s business in the northern market. But rest assured, if you have a child for me—preferably a son, of course—I will definitely leave a portion of my assets to our child in the future. After all, he would be my own flesh and blood. I certainly wouldn’t only show favoritism to my eldest."
Jasmine Sterling could barely maintain her expression. Miss Warner, ever the shrewd people-reader, noticed Jasmine’s displeasure and quickly interjected, "Jasmine, Mr. Warner is just a very direct person. But isn’t efficiency what blind dates are all about? See? He’s laid all his cards on the table for you. That’s very sincere."
Jasmine Sterling forced a smile, hesitating over how to refuse him, when Randall Jennings suddenly spoke up.
