In the next instant, the radiant expression on her face vanished, and her entire presence seemed to dim.
Seeing this, the others exchanged bewildered glances.
It was perfectly normal for a single man to bring a date to an upscale party like this; it didn’t necessarily mean they were in a serious relationship. But right now, the way those two looked at each other was intimate. The woman’s gaze on Kael Jennings was exceptionally tender and lingering.
It was plain to see their relationship was anything but simple.
Cecilia Sterling glanced worriedly at Estelle Goodman. Just as she was about to say something, she saw Estelle suddenly compose herself, put a suitable smile back on her face, and stride quickly toward Kael Jennings.
"Este—"
Cecilia hadn’t even finished speaking when she noticed a stubbornness in the very line of Estelle’s back as she walked away.
This only made her more worried.
Her other close friends watched anxiously, one of them unable to stop from murmuring, "Is Kael dating someone?"
"I don’t know. This is so sudden!"
"If she really is his girlfriend, what’s Estelle going to do...?"
Kael Jennings was greeting Conrad and Mrs. Goodman. His voice was as refined as his demeanor as he spoke with impeccable manners. "Mr. and Mrs. Goodman, my uncle asked me to offer his apologies. He had an allergic reaction a few days ago, and his doctor has forbidden him from drinking for the next two weeks. So, he sent me to congratulate you on your new home in his stead."
Conrad and Mrs. Goodman were taken aback. "Chairman Jennings had an allergic reaction?" they asked with concern. "Is it serious?"
"If it weren’t serious, he would have come himself," Kael Jennings replied honestly. "He went into sudden anaphylactic shock and was in critical condition. Thankfully, he pulled through. You don’t need to worry."
Only then did Mr. and Mrs. Goodman nod in relief. Mrs. Goodman’s eyes fell on the young woman beside Kael Jennings, a flicker of surprise crossing her face. She was about to ask about her but stopped when she saw her own daughter approaching.
They knew their daughter had feelings for Kael Jennings.
But even though Mrs. Goodman didn’t ask, Kael Jennings, out of sheer politeness, made the introduction himself. "Mr. and Mrs. Goodman, allow me to introduce my fiancée, Tiana Travis."
His voice was neither loud nor soft, but the words reached Estelle’s ears perfectly, and the resilient facade she had carefully constructed shattered instantly.
She stopped dead in her tracks just behind Kael Jennings, her legs suddenly feeling as if they were filled with lead, refusing to move another inch.
’Good news: she wasn’t his girlfriend.’
’Bad news: she was his fiancée.’
’It was even more permanent than she could have ever imagined, leaving no room for hope.’
Mrs. Goodman saw her daughter’s stunned expression and the way the corners of her eyes were turning red, and her heart ached for her. Yet, all she could manage was a stiff, awkward smile. "So, you’re getting engaged?"
"Yes, ma’am. The engagement is mid-month. You and Mr. Goodman absolutely must come," Kael Jennings invited with a smile.
Mrs. Goodman nodded. When she looked up to find her daughter, she was already gone.
Conrad Goodman let out a soft sigh. With Kael Jennings engaged, there was nothing more he could say. All he could do was silently ache for his daughter.
Estelle practically fled back into the villa. Cecilia, who had been watching her the whole time, saw her go and immediately hurried in after her.
Cecilia ran all the way to Estelle’s room on the third floor. Afraid something was wrong, she began knocking urgently. "Estelle! Estelle, are you in there? It’s Cecilia!"
"Estelle?"
