The battle ended as quickly as it had begun. The surviving rogues, seeing their companions dead or dying, took off back into the forest. Our warriors gave chase, but I could already tell they wouldn’t catch them. They’d scattered like roaches.

Andrei was at my side in seconds, his hands running over me, checking for injuries. “Are you hurt? Did they touch you? The baby-

“I’m fine,” I assured him, gripping his hands and giving him a firm look. “We’re both fine.”

Catherine approached us, wiping blood from her blade. “That was no random attack,” she said grimly. “I think they were specifically after you, Natalia.”

Andrei’s jaw ticked. “Yeah, no shit. I told you you shouldn’t have come today.”

I sank down onto a nearby boulder, suddenly feeling exhausted. “I didn’t think they’d come for me so soon after the other day. What the hell do they want with me?”

“After the other day?” Catherine blanched. “This isn’t the first time?”

“No.” I glanced up at her, then over at Andrei, who was silent but his eyes were filled with fury. “I was

ambushed by three rogues a few days ago. It’s only thanks to this knife-“I held up the ruby–encrusted dagger –“that I survived.”

“I told her to stay home, but she insisted on being here today,” Andrei grumbled. “Always has to be fucking hands–on.”

“Well, it’s not like I can hide forever. I’ve got work to do.”

Andrei grunted in response, clearly knowing I was right but not wanting to admit it.

A silence fell, and a chill ran down my spine as I considered the possibilities. The rogues had mentioned having to take me somewhere alive twice now. Helena was the obvious suspect behind the orders, of course. She shouldn’t have known that I was alive, though, which made me worry that something had happened to David and Celeste.

While Catherine and her husband went off to check the damage and tend to their warriors, Andrei dropped to a crouch in front of me and took my hands in his.

“Natalia-”

“No. Don’t say it.” I pulled my hands away and jabbed a finger into his chest. “It’s already hard enough, having to sit around most of the time. Especially letting you go off into battle without me. I’m not going to coop myself up even more.”

Andrei’s jaw feathered, but he shook his head. “No, I wasn’t going to say that. I know you’re too stubborn to listen anyway. But you need protection. What if I’m not there to help you?”

I knew he was right, of course. And I knew what he was getting at. I hated the idea of being followed around by a bodyguard all the time–it was too much of a reminder of the five years I had spent in hiding in Ashmoor, constantly looking over my shoulder, constantly fearing for my life.
