Chapter 418

My Beta nodded and started relaying orders to the other packs leaders.

Once we were ready, we began the harrowing ascent once more. My muscles screamed in protest, but I kept. pushing. Kept going. I had to.

It took us several more hours of steady, fast-paced marching to come close to the palace again. In the early morning light, I could see the windows peeking out through the mountainside, the buttery yellow light spilling out from within. Once we were there, I split away from the march briefly to shift and give the signal.

Three howls.

The sounds echoed across the mountainside, one after the other, carrying through the snow and fog.

I hoped Natalia could hear it from where she was.

I hoped she could accomplish the task we’d set out to do.

Now, it was time to wait.

The army spread out across the mountainside, taking cover behind rocks and in shallow caves. I couldn’t sit still, so I paced a hole in the snow. The thirty minutes seemed to stretch on forever, each second turning into an eternity of its own. I kept thinking about Natalia in that palace, all alone and outnumbered. I kept thinking about the explosive ruby she had in her pocket.

Thirty seconds. She just had to break the ruby and then get away within thirty seconds.

And then… The Winter King’s “army” would be reduced to ash.

Or so I hoped.

I knew she could do it. She was strong, stronger than anyone I’d ever known-certainly stronger than me. She’d survived so much already; she would survive this, too.

Finally, the thirty minutes were up. I felt no shake in the earth, heard no explosion, but the walls of the stronghold were thick. Perhaps the blast simply couldn’t reach our ears.

Or perhaps Natalia had failed.

Either way, it was time.

At my Beta’s nod, I turned to my warriors and held up my scimitar, ruby glinting in the morning light.

“The Winter King is in there,” I said, pointing my blade at the mountainside where the palace lay. “He thinks he’s untouchable. He thinks his palace is impregnable. He thinks he can hide away here and get away with all of the atrocities he’s exacted on our home.”

I looked around at the faces of my warriors, some in wolf form, some not, eyes all glowing with the promise of battle.

“But right now, his soldiers are nothing but ash and rubble. His greatest weapon, built on pain and innocence, is gone. All that’s left is a coward wearing a stolen face, hiding behind layers of stone. We’re going to tear those walls down, and we’re going to drag him out of his throne room and make him answer for every life he’s taken.

Every child’s life that he’s stolen.”

Growls and shouts began to echo through the crowd. Warriors raised their weapons, wolves raised their haunches, prepared to fight.

“This ends today!” I called out. “No mercy! We will fight until every last one of his followers is dead or surrendering! Are you with me?”

The roar that answered was deafening. Wolves howled, men shouted. Rubies gleamed in the morning light.

I shifted and led the charge up the mountain.

The palace loomed ahead, its walls dark and ominous against the bright white snow. As the clouds parted, letting sun shine down on the ground outside, I could finally see the stronghold’s blackened stone-like a dark stain on the mountaintop.

The guards at the entrance saw us coming and tried to fight back, but they were cut down before they could make a sound. The lack of an army waiting for us filled me with hope-hope that Natalia had succeeded and that, amidst the chaos inside, no one knew we were coming.

But when the wood of the grand doors splintered beneath our battering rams, and we burst into the palace with a barrage of cries and howls, I realized that I had been dead wrong.

Because there, in perfect formation across the length of the hall, stood the Winter King’s army.

Perfect, pale warriors in shining armor. Skin and muscles carved from stone. Dull eyes that only followed one order: to kill. In their hands, each and every one held a ruby weapon that was already pulsing with red light.

And Natalia was nowhere to be seen.
