Chapter 123
Damon pov
I made my way home well after midnight, my father finally, genuinely asleep, his vitals stable, the healers assuring me they’d contact me immediately if anything changed overnight.
*He has to be okay,* I thought, walking through the quiet, dark compound toward our temporary quarters near the council chambers. *I need to stop being the person who only calls when everything’s already falling apart. need to actually be present, actually notice things sooner, rather than constantly reacting after crisis has already struck.*
I found Evelyn already asleep when I arrived, Willow settled peacefully in the makeshift nursery the guest wing’s staff had helped arrange, and I checked on both of them carefully before finally allowing myself to settle into bed beside Evelyn, exhaustion from the entire brutal day finally catching up with me completely.
I drifted into uneasy sleep almost immediately, my mind still cycling through everything-the leak investigation, the emergency council session scheduled for tomorrow, my father’s fragile, hard-won rest, Genevieve’s continued, unresolved threat hanging over all of it.
My phone’s sharp, insistent ding cut through my sleep with jarring, immediate urgency.
I fumbled for it in the dark, heart already pounding before I’d even registered the message, some old, familiar dread building sharp in my chest.
*Emergency. Medical wing. Your father-someone broke in. He’s been attacked. Come immediately.*
I was out of bed before I’d fully processed the words, adrenaline flooding through my system so completely I barely registered dressing, barely registered anything beyond the desperate, terrified need to reach him immediately.
“Damon?” Evelyn’s voice came through the darkness, alarmed, already sitting up as she registered my frantic movement. “What’s happening?”
“My father,” I said, my voice tight with barely controlled panic. “Someone broke into the medical wing, attacked him. I need to go now.”
“Go,” she said immediately, already reaching for her own phone, presumably to alert Sarah and the additional security posted nearby. “I’ll call Callum, make sure you have backup.”
I was already moving, sprinting through the dark, quiet compound toward the medical wing, my mind racing through terrifying possibilities, understanding with sick, immediate clarity exactly who had almost certainly orchestrated this-Genevieve, somehow circumventing security yet again, this time with violence direct and immediate enough to genuinely threaten my father’s already fragile life.
I burst into the medical wing to find controlled chaos, healers moving with urgent, focused efficiency, security personnel already swarming the area, and my heart lurched violently at the sight of my father’s room, the door damaged, evidence of struggle visible even from the hallway.
