I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Darius’s cold stare, his tired face, and the way he’d dismissed me like I was nothing more than a convenient accessory for his meeting.

By dawn, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to fix this. I had to try.

I found him in his office, hunched over a stack of papers. Documents were spread across his massive desk, and his laptop screen glowed with what looked like security reports. He didn’t look up when I knocked on the doorframe.

“Darius.”

A muscle in his jaw twitched. “Explain what, exactly?”

“I know where you were.”

“The meeting is in two days, Clara. Three hundred of the most powerful alphas in the region will be watching every move we make. I need you to act normal. No drama. No emotional outbursts. No hints that we have relationship issues.”

Relationship problems, like I was some hysterical female causing trouble for no reason.

“Can you do that?” he asked, his tone suggesting he wasn’t sure I was capable of basic professionalism.

I wanted to argue. I wanted to demand that he listen to me right now. But the look in his eyes stopped me cold. This wasn’t my mate asking for patience. This was an alpha giving orders.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

“Good. Sophia will have your dresses ready this evening. Pick whichever one you think will make the best impression. We leave tomorrow morning.”

He turned back to his papers, effectively dismissing me. I stood there for a moment, watching him ignore me completely. The silence felt heavy, final.

As I reached the door, something made me stop. A memory that had been nagging at me since last night.

“Darius?”

He didn’t look up from his papers. “What?”

“What are the terms of our agreement?”

My mouth went dry as I realized I had agreed to that. In my desperation to survive, to get revenge on Jaden, I had bound myself to this man without thinking about the consequences.
