Clara’s POV

I stumbled out of his office on shaky legs, my heart pounding so hard I thought it might burst from my chest. The hallway felt endless as I made my way back to my room, his words echoing in my mind like a curse.

In time, you’ll understand exactly what you signed up for.

What had I signed up for? What did he know that I didn’t? The questions spun in my head until I felt dizzy.

I spent the rest of the morning pacing my room like a caged animal. Every time I tried to focus on something else, his wicked smile flashed in my memory. The way he’d looked at me like he was holding all the cards and I didn’t even know we were playing a game.

Around noon, a soft knock interrupted my spiraling thoughts.

“Come in,” I called out.

Marcus stepped into the room, his expression carefully neutral. “Clara, Alpha Darius asked me to inform you that you should start preparing for departure. We leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. “Thank you for letting me know.”

He hesitated at the door. “Is everything alright? You look pale.”

“I’m fine,” I lied.

Marcus didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push. “Travel time is about six hours. We’ll arrive in the afternoon, which gives you time to rest before the evening reception.”

After he left, I sank onto my bed and sighed deeply. I was really in a mess right now. All I could do was hope that whatever I’d gotten myself into wouldn’t bite me in the ass later.

The rest of the day crawled by painfully slow. I tried reading, tried taking a bath, tried anything to distract myself from the growing knot of anxiety in my stomach. But nothing worked. Every hour that passed brought me closer to whatever Darius had planned.

By the time evening came, I was a nervous wreck. I barely touched my dinner, pushing food around my plate while my mind raced with possibilities. None of them were good.

I went to bed early but sleep wouldn’t come. I stared at the ceiling for hours, watching shadows move across the walls as moonlight filtered through my curtains. When I finally drifted off, my dreams were filled with ice–cold blue eyes and wicked smiles.

Morning came too soon.

I was already dressed and packed when another knock came at my door. This time it was one of the younger pack members.

“Alpha Darius is waiting downstairs,” she said. “The car is ready.”

My stomach dropped. Here we go.

I grabbed my bag and made my way downstairs, my legs feeling like lead with every step. The main entrance was bustling with activity as pack members loaded luggage and made final preparations.

Darius stood near a sleek black SUV, talking quietly with his driver. When he saw me approaching, he turned and smiled.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

The smile was warm, genuine, reaching all the way to his eyes. It was the complete opposite of the cold, terrifying man I’d faced in his office yesterday. This was the Darius who had trained me, protected me, made me feel like I mattered.

“Good morning, Clara,” he said, his voice gentle. “Ready for our trip?”

I blinked, completely thrown off balance. “I… yes. Ready.”

He stepped forward and took my bag from my hands, his fingers brushing mine in the process. The touch was soft, almost tender.

“You look beautiful this morning,” he murmured, his eyes scanning my face with what looked like genuine affection.

My heart did a strange little flip. What was happening? Yesterday he’d looked at me like I was something he wanted to crush under his heel. Today he was acting like a devoted boyfriend.

This man was an entire puzzle, and despite everything that had happened, I couldn’t help but feel more drawn to him. The way he could switch between terrifying warlord and caring

protector made my head spin.

“Thank you,” I managed to say.

He opened the car door for me like a perfect gentleman, his hand resting on the small of my back as I climbed in. The gesture was protective, possessive, but in a way that made heat pool in my stomach instead of fear.

The ride was intense in ways I hadn’t expected. Darius sat beside me in the back seat, close enough that I could smell his cologne and feel the warmth radiating from his body. He made casual conversation, asking about my comfort, pointing out landmarks as we passed them.

I glanced at him, still trying to process this complete personality change. “I’m nervous,” I admitted honestly.

“That’s normal. You’ll do fine.” His hand found mine, fingers intertwining in a gesture that felt surprisingly natural. “Just follow my lead and remember what we discussed about acting normal.”

The driver, whose face seemed unfamiliar, chuckled from the front seat. “Alpha, if you don’t mind me saying, you two make a beautiful couple. Very well–matched.”

Darius smiled, but I caught something calculating in his eyes. “Thank you, James. Clara is quite remarkable.”

“If

you don’t mind me asking Alpha Darius, but how long have you two been together?” James asked, glancing at us through the rearview mirror.

“Feels like a lifetime,” Darius replied smoothly, squeezing my hand. “Though it’s been about eight months now, hasn’t it, sweetheart?”

The endearment rolled off his tongue so easily that I almost believed it was real. “Yes,” I managed to say. “Eight months.”

“Time flies when you’re happy. It was truly an honor to be assigned to pick you up and drive you to the venue, alpha. I get to see such an amazing bond forged by the goddess.” James commented with a grin.
