I stepped closer to Luka, close enough that he had to tilt his head back to maintain eye contact.

“Clara is my choice. She is my mate. She will be your Luna. These are facts, not suggestions. If you have a problem with facts, you’re welcome to find another pack to serve.”

Luka’s face went pale. “Alpha, I didn’t mean-‘

“What you meant is irrelevant. What matters is what you do now.” I turned to address all six of them. “Clara’s ceremony is in one week. You six will be responsible for security. The safety of every guest, every pack member, every dignitary who attends will be in your hands.”

I let that sink in for a moment.

“If your focus is this poor during the ceremony, people will die. Is that what you want? To explain to the families of the dead that you were too busy gossiping about my personal life to do your jobs?”

“No, Alpha,” they said in unison.

“Then I suggest you get your minds back in the game. This is the biggest event our pack has hosted in years. Alphas from across the region will be attending. Any security failure will be seen as weakness, and weakness invites challenge.”

I began pacing in front of them again, hands clasped behind my back.

“There are wolves out there who would love nothing more than to see Shadowfang Pack fail. Who would celebrate any sign that we’re losing our edge. Are you going to give them that satisfaction?”

“No, Alpha,” they repeated, more firmly this time.

“Good. Because I’m counting on you. All of you. You’re my elite team for a reason, and I expect you to act

like it.”

I stopped pacing and faced them directly.

Something shifted in their posture. Spines straightened. Jaws set. The shame and confusion in their eyes was replaced by determination and focus.

“We’re ready, Alpha,” Jarek said.

“Prove it. Back to sparring. I want to see the level of performance I know you’re capable of.”

They moved immediately, pairing off and resuming their training. But this time was different. The sloppy footwork was gone. The slow punches were replaced by quick, sharp strikes. The weak defenses disappeared as they fell back into proper form.

“Better,” I called out. “Much better.”

They continued sparring for another twenty minutes while I watched from the sideline. Their technique remained sharp, their focus absolute. Whatever doubts they’d had about Clara seemed to have been set aside in favor of professional duty.

I studied their faces one more time, looking for any remaining signs of doubt or hesitation. I saw none.
