CHAPTER 156-1
Alpha Darius’s POV
I woke up slumped in my office chair, my neck stiff from sleeping in an awkward position. The room was still dark, the early morning light barely touching the windows.
In my hands was the dress Clara had worn the night before she disappeared. The soft blue fabric was
wrinkled from where I’d been clutching it throughout the night. I’d brought it here yesterday, thinking
somehow having something of hers close might ease the ache in my chest.
It hadn’t worked.
The dress still carried her scent, faint but unmistakable. I pressed it to my face, breathing in the familiar smell of vanilla and wildflowers that was uniquely Clara. For a moment, I could almost pretend she was
here with me.
But the illusion shattered the moment I opened my eyes.
I looked at the clock on my desk. Four thirty in the morning. I’d managed less than an hour of sleep before the nightmares woke me up. Dreams of Clara calling for help, dreams of her being hurt while I couldn’t
reach her.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face. Heard her voice. Felt the ghost of her touch on my skin. Sleep was impossible when your mate was missing, when half of your soul had been ripped away.
I set the dress carefully on my desk, smoothing out the wrinkles with gentle fingers. Today I would go out myself to search for her. I’d already planned the route, studied the maps, coordinated with the tracking teams. Sitting here waiting for news was driving me insane.
The helplessness was the worst part. I was an Alpha, used to controlling situations, used to protecting what was mine. But I couldn’t protect Clara if I didn’t know where she was.
I forced myself to focus on the papers scattered across my desk. Pack business that couldn’t wait, even though every fiber of my being wanted to drop everything and hunt for Clara. Supply reports that needed approval, border patrol schedules that required adjustment, budget allocations that demanded my
signature.
Normal Alpha duties that felt completely meaningless without her here to share them with.
We’d talked about these things together, planned the pack’s future side by side. Now the papers felt like they were written in a foreign language, the numbers and schedules blurring together as my mind
wandered back to her.
After struggling to concentrate for over an hour, I realized I needed files from my room. The latest territorial agreements that required my signature before they could be finalized. I’d promised the neighboring pack leaders a response by today.

Hmade my way through the quiet packhouse, my footsteps echoing in the empty hallways. Most of the pack was still asleep, unaware that their Alpha had spent another sleepless night walking the halls like a
ghost.
The silence felt oppressive Clara had always filled these halls with life, with laughter, with the warmth of her presence. Without her, the packhouse felt like a tomb.
As I climbed the stairs toward my room, I heard voices coming from one of the common areas. Pack
members who were up early, probably getting ready for morning patrol duty. The sound of normal conversation felt strange after days of hushed whispers and worried looks.
“I’m just saying, maybe she got cold feet,” one voice said. It sounded like Liam from the border patrol unit.
I froze on the stairs, my hand gripping the banister.
“About what?” another voice asked.
“About mating with the Alpha. Think about it. She was rejected by her first mate, then suddenly she’s with
one of the most powerful Alphas in the region. Maybe it all got too real for her.”
My blood turned cold. They were talking about Clara, discussing her like she was some flighty girl who
couldn’t handle commitment.
“You think she ran away?” the second voice asked.
“It’s possible,” Liam said. “Women can be unpredictable. Maybe she realized she wasn’t ready for this kind
of life and decided to bolt before the ceremony.”
“But why wouldn’t she just tell Alpha Darius?”
“Because she knew he wouldn’t let her go,” Liam replied. “So she waited for the right moment and
disappeared. Probably planned it all out.”

CHAPTER 156-2
The rage that filled me was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. My wolf was roaring for blood, demanding that I tear apart anyone who dared suggest Clara had abandoned me. The very idea was an insult to everything we’d built together.
“She probably found some other pack to take her in,” Liam continued, oblivious to the danger he was putting himself in. “Somewhere she could start over without all the pressure of being Luna.”
I was moving before I’d consciously decided to. My feet carried me toward the voices, my hands already
shifting partially as my claws extended. The need to defend Clara’s honor was overwhelming every
rational thought.
The two warriors looked up in shock as I appeared in the doorway. Liam’s face went white when he saw
my expression, the coffee cup in his hand shaking.
“Alpha,” he stammered. “We were just…”
“You were just what?” My voice came out as a growl, barely human. The wolf in me was so close to the surface that I could feel my canines elongating. “Discussing how my mate abandoned me?”
“No, Alpha, we were just trying to understand…” Liam’s voice cracked on the words.
“Understand what?” I stepped into the room, and both men immediately backed away from me. They
could sense the danger radiating from every pore, could smell the fury rolling off me in waves. “Understand how Clara, who loves this pack and loves me, would just run away without a word?”
“We didn’t mean anything by it,” the other warrior said quickly, his voice high with fear. “We’re just worried
about what happened to her.”
“Worried?” I laughed, but there was no humor in it. The sound was harsh and bitter, making both men flinch. “You’re spreading rumors about your Luna. You’re suggesting she’s a coward who runs from
commitment.”
Liam opened his mouth to respond, but I cut him off with a snarl.

“Clara was taken,” I said, my voice deadly quiet. Each word was carefully controlled, but the threat
underneath was unmistakable. “Someone kidnapped her from our territory. She didn’t run away. She didn’t get cold feet. She was stolen from us.”
Both men nodded frantically, clearly terrified by the fury radiating from me. They pressed themselves
against the wall as if they could disappear into it.
“And if I hear either of you, or anyone else, suggesting otherwise again, I will personally tear out your
throats and feed them to the ravens.”
My wolf was pushing for more violence, wanting to make an example of them. The only thing stopping me was the sound of footsteps approaching rapidly.
