HAPTER 62-2
#75 Prants
“What about the sister? Liana?”
“What about her?” His jaw tensed.
“Clara must hate her. The sister who stole her mate, her position, her life.”
“That,” Darius said with a cold smile, “would be an understatement.”
“What’s she like? The sister?”
“Weak. Manipulative. Everything Jaden thought he wanted in a mate.” Darius scoffed. “Someone who would never challenge him, never question his decisions.” He shook his head. “He traded a lioness for a house cat.”
I had to admire Clara’s restraint. If someone had betrayed me the way her sister had betrayed her, I’m not sure I could have shown the same control.
If Liana were my sister, she’d probably be dead, and her remains would be nowhere to be found.
“So what happens now?” I asked.
“Now? Clara proves herself on missions like the one I’m sending her on. She gets stronger. More skilled. More dangerous.” Darius’s eyes gleamed. “And when the time is right, Jaden will discover exactly what he threw away.”
“You’re going to use her against him.”
“I’m going to give her the opportunity to take back what was stolen from her.”
“And if she doesn’t want that opportunity?”
Darius laughed. “Trust me, she wants it. The rage in that woman burns hotter than any fire I’ve ever seen. She’s just learned to hide it better.”
“What about the western ridge?”
Darius waved a hand dismissively. “We’d share ownership. Consider it payment for your discretion about Clara’s origins.”
I was stunned for a moment. With the way he said it, I was starting to have a feeling he was the reason we couldn’t find anything about Clara’s past.
But knowing Darius, he wouldn’t spill.
Fraised an eyebrow. “Just like that?”

“Just like that. The ridge was never really what this was about anyway.”
“Then what was it about?”

“Testing Clara. Seeing how she’d perform under pressure. Whether she could handle herself against an Alpha.” He smiled. “She exceeded every expectation.”
I had to admit, she had. Even drugged, she’d been formidable. At full strength, she might have
been unstoppable.
Deciding to try my luck, I said. “There’s something else. My people investigated her background
We found nothing. No records, no history, nothing.”
There was a long pause and for a moment, I thought he’d just dismiss me but he stunned me with
his next words.
“That’s because Jaden had them destroyed,” Darius replied. “Part of the rejection process. He
wanted to erase her completely.”
“That’s not legal.”
“Since when has Jaden cared about laws? He’s always believed pack Alpha privilege puts him
above such things.”
Another black mark against Jaden in my book. The man was becoming more despicable by the
minute.
“Does anyone else know about this?” I asked.
“You, me, and Xander. That’s it.”
“Good. It needs to stay that way.”
Darius nodded. “For now, yes. Eventually, when the time is right, the truth will come out. But not
yet.”
I sat back in my chair, processing everything I’d learned. Clara wasn’t just some random rogue
Darius had taken in.
She was Jaden’s rejected mate, cast out and hunted by the man who should have protected her. No wonder she fought with such intensity and seemed to have such deep reserves of anger and
determination.
“Jaden really is a fool,” I said finally. “Throwing away someone like that.”
“The biggest fool I’ve ever encountered,” Darius agreed. “Which is why he’s going to get exactly
what he deserves.”

We sat in comfortable silence for a moment, both contemplating the implications of what we’d
discussed. Then Darius spoke again.
“What will you do with this information?”
“Nothing, for now. But if you move against Jaden, I want to know about it.”
“Planning to get involved?”
“Jaden has been a thorn in my side for years. If someone’s going to take him down, I want a front
row seat.”
Darius chuckled. “I think that can be arranged.”
“Good. Because a man who treats women like disposable property deserves whatever’s coming to
him.”
“I couldn’t agree more. Clara is going to make sure he understands exactly what he lost.”
I was about to respond when there was a sharp knock at the door.
Both Darius and I froze.
The knock came again, more insistent this time.
Darius and I exchanged glances. We’d been talking for over an hour about Clara’s origins, Jaden’s betrayal, and plans for revenge. If someone had been listening…
The knock came a third time.
Neither of us moved, both wondering the same thing: how much had they heard?
