CHAPTER 62-1

Alpha Ronan’s POV

“Then we both keep our mouths shut about the real nature of that fight, and we move on,”

Darius stood up and walked to the window, looking out at his territory. For a moment, I thought he was going to refuse. Then he turned back to me.

“She came from Shadowcrest.”

I felt something cold settle in my stomach. “Jaden’s pack.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“About a couple of months ago. She was half–dead when I found her running from something.”

“From what?”

Darius hesitated. “From Jaden’s hunters. They were trying to kill her.”

The pieces started falling into place. A woman fleeing Jaden’s territory. No records of her existence. The skills of someone who’d been trained but had to hide it.

“She was part of his pack,” I said. It wasn’t a question.

“Yes. A very big part.”

“What was her position?”

“High ranking. Important enough that Jaden wanted her dead rather than risk her talking.”

I could see Darius was still holding back. “There’s more to it than that.”

“There always is.”

“Darius,” I said, warning in my voice. “We had a deal.”

He sighed and returned to his desk. “Fine. But this doesn’t leave this room.”

I nodded.

“She was Jaden’s mate. His intended Luna, and from what I gathered, they were almost fully

mated.”

The words hit me like a blow. Clara had been Jaden’s mate? The woman who’d nearly defeated me in single combat had been promised to my greatest enemy?

“What happened?” I asked, my voice rougher than I intended.

“Jaden rejected her. He chose her sister instead.”

“Her sister?”

Liana. The current Luna of Shadowcrest.” Darius returned to his desk. “Clara found out he was cheating on her and there was a confrontation. Jaden took things far and rejected her. He didn’t stop there. He declared her a threat to pack stability and sent hunters after her.”

I processed this information, trying to fit it with what I knew. “So she fled here.”

“She barely made it across the border alive. I found her getting hunted and almost dying from blood loss and exhaustion as she fought to survive.”

“And you took her in.”

“I saw potential in her. Someone that skilled, that determined… she could be useful.”

“Useful how?”

Darius smiled, and this time it was genuine. “Think about it, Ronan. Jaden threw away the strongest female I’ve ever encountered. Cast her out like she was nothing. What kind of fool does

that?”

I was starting to understand. “You’re planning something.”

“Alpha Jaden has always been arrogant. Always believed his own press about being the perfect Alpha. But he made a mistake with Clara.” Darius leaned forward. “And mistakes have

consequences.”

“What kind of consequences?”

“The kind that come back to bite you when you least expect it.”

I studied Darius’s face. He was clearly planning something involving Clara and Jaden, but he wasn’t going to give me all the details.

“Does she know?” I asked. “About your plans?”

“Clara has her own reasons for wanting Jaden to suffer. Let’s just say our interests align perfectly.”

“Revenge.”

“Justice,” Darius corrected. “Jaden used her and discarded her when she became inconvenient. Used her training and knowledge to benefit his pack, then threw her away when he found someone

he believed was more fitting for the role.”

I couldn’t argue with that logic. I’d never liked Jaden, and his treatment of his former mate only confirmed my opinion of him.

“What was her training?” I asked. “She fights like someone who’s had years of intensive combat

instruction”

“Because I believe she has.” Darius said, voice low. “I’m not certain yet. But she probably had training that helped her become good at combat, strategy, diplomacy, and pack management. Everything a perfect Luna should know.” His expression darkened.

“That would explain her skills.”

“Partially.” He leaned forward slightly. “But Clara has natural talent that goes beyond any training I’ve seen. She’s special, Ronan. That’s why Jaden’s rejection was such a massive mistake and I’m certain he’d regret it. I will make him regret it.”

“And why are you planning to make him pay for it?”

“She’s my investment and she’s worth protecting.” Darius said flatly.
