CHAPTER 65-2
I could hear their voices in the hallway; growing fainter as they moved toward the main entrance. Good. That gave me time to think about the next steps in my real plan.
I was still thinking through the details when I heard footsteps returning. The door opened and Darius
walked back in, closing it behind him.
“Is everything alright?” I asked, noting something tense in his posture.
“Fine,” he said, but his tone suggested otherwise. “Ronan’s gone,”
“Good. So the mission tomorrow?” I asked.
Darius looked at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable: “Are you ready?
I frowned. “Ready for what? You told me I’d be leaving tomorrow morning. Xander is supposed to brief me tonight on the details.”
“Right,” Darius said, but he still looked uncomfortable about something.
“Is there a problem?” I pressed.
“No, no problem,” he replied quickly. “I just…”
He trailed off, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words. The way he was acting was strange. Darius was usually direct and confident. This hesitation wasn’t like him at all.
“Darius, what’s wrong?” I asked. “You’re acting weird?
He opened his mouth to answer, then closed it again. We stared at each other in awkward silence, both clearly uncomfortable but neither knowing what to say.
The tension in the room was thick. Something was definitely bothering him, but he didn’t seem to want to tell me what it was.
Just when I thought the silence might stretch on forever, there was a sharp knock at the door.
“Enter,” Darius called, and I could hear the relief in his voice.
Xander walked in, his expression serious. “Alpha, I have news about the rogue wolf situation.”
“What about it?” I asked, looking between them.
Xander glanced at Darius, who nodded for him to continue.
“Clara doesn’t need to go anywhere,” Xander said. “We just caught the culprit. It wasn’t a rogue wolf at all.”
I sat up straighter. “What do you mean?”
“It was a spy,” Xander explained. “Someone from Shadowcrest Pack who was pretending to be a rogue wolf, leaving fake tracks and markings to make us think there was a lone wolf in our territory.”
