CHAPTER 72

Alpha Darius’s POV

The crowd began to disperse after my announcement, people returning to their daily routines with the image of the impaled spy fresh in their minds. Good. That was exactly what I wanted.

Fear was a useful tool. It kept people in line, reminded them of the consequences of betrayal. The spy would hang there for three days before I allowed him to die, serving as a constant reminder to anyone who might consider crossing me.

I turned to head back into the packhouse, satisfied that the message had been delivered clearly. But as I scanned the dispersing crowd, my eyes caught sight of Clara standing near the bushes.

Her face was white as a paper sheet. Completely drained of color.

She looked like she was about to be sick again. I could see her hands trembling slightly as she tried to steady herself against the wall.

For a moment, an unfamiliar urge washed over me. I wanted to walk over to her, pull her aside, and tell her that she had nothing to fear from me. That what she had witnessed was reserved for enemies and traitors,

not for her.

I actually took a step in her direction before stopping myself.

What the hell was I thinking?

I shook my head, forcing the unwanted thoughts away. This was exactly the kind of weakness I couldn’t afford. Clara was here for a specific purpose, and if she was the right person for the job I had actually chosen her for, this scene wasn’t even close to what she would have to endure seeing.

She needed to understand what kind of world she was entering. What kind of man I really was. If she couldn’t handle seeing a traitor’s punishment, how could she handle what was coming next?

I turned away from her deliberately and walked into the packhouse. I had more important things to focus on than coddling someone who should already know what she had signed up for.

My office was a welcome refuge from the chaos outside. I settled behind my desk and began reviewing the reports that had accumulated overnight. Border patrols, supply inventories, training schedules. The mundane but necessary work of running a pack.

I had been working for about an hour when my phone rang. The caller ID showed a number I recognized immediately.

Killian,I answered, leaning back in my chair.

Darius, came the familiar voice of Alpha Killian Belmont. Hope I’m not interrupting anything important.

Nothing that can’t wait. What do you need?

CHAPTER 2

It’s time for our pack treaty renewal,Killian said My council is breathing down my neck about getting it finalized.

I checked my calendar, mentally calculating the best time for such a meeting. Treaty renewals were important but tedious affairs that required careful attention to detail.

“When were you thinking?I asked.

I’m flexible. When works best for you?

I flipped through several pages of my schedule, looking for a block of time that would work for both of us.

There were several conflicts in the coming weeks, but I found a suitable opening.

How about three weeks from now? The fifteenth?

That works perfectly,” Killian replied. Morning or afternoon?

Let’s say ten in the morning. That will give us plenty of time to go through everything without rushing.

Sounds good. I’ll bring my usual team. How many people should I plan for on your side?

Four, maybe five. I’ll confirm the exact number closer to the date.

Perfect. Anything specific you want to discuss beyond the standard renewal terms?

I considered this for a moment. Our current treaty was fairly comprehensive, but there were always small adjustments that could be made to benefit both parties.

We can go over the territorial boundaries again. There have been some changes in the neutral zones that might affect our agreement.

Good point. I’ll have my people prepare updated maps.

Excellent. Anything else?

That covers everything on my end,Killian said. I’ll see you on the fifteenth.

r Looking forward to it,” I replied, though that wasn’t entirely true. Treaty renewals were necessary but rarely exciting.

I hung up the phone and made a note in my calendar about the meeting, I would need to brief my legal team and have them prepare all the necessary documents well in advance.

The rest of the day passed quietly. I handled several administrative matters, approved training schedules for the next month, and reviewed reports from my border patrols. The spy’s body remained in the courtyard, drawing occasional glances from pack members who passed by.

By evening, i was satisfied that the message had been received. Pack discipline was crucial, and displays like this reminded everyone of the consequences of betrayal.

The following days fell into their usual rhythm. Training sessions continued as normal, with Clara participating but maintaining her distance from me. She seemed more focused during combat practice.

CHAPTER

perhaps driven by what she had witnessed.

Xander handled the removal of the spy’s body after the three days were up, disposing of it quietly without fanfare. The courtyard was cleaned thoroughly, removing all traces of what had happened there.

I kept myself busy with pack business and various administrative duties. There were always reports to review, disputes to settle, and decisions to make. Running a pack of this size required constant attention to detail.

Clara continued her training and integration into pack life, but i noticed she avoided being alone with me. Whether this was due to what happened between us in the hallway of her reaction to the spy’s punishment, I couldn’t say.
