CHAPTER 87-1
Clara’s POV
The guilt hit me like a wave. I felt like a slut, responding to another man the same way I responded to Darius. Darius, who had saved my life, who had given me protection and purpose, who had just hours ago made me feel things I had never felt before.
I shook my head violently, trying to clear away the inappropriate thoughts.
“Let me go,” I demanded, though my voice came out breathier than I intended.
“I don’t think you really want me to,” Killian said, his lips very close to my ear.
“Yes, I do.”
“Your body is telling me something different.”
I wanted to deny it, but I couldn’t. My heart was racing, my skin felt too warm, and I was very aware of every point where our bodies were touching. Just like with Darius. Just like earlier today when
he had claimed me so completely.
The comparison made me feel sick with guilt.
“This is wrong,” I said, but even I could hear how unconvincing I sounded.
“Why?” he asked. “Because of Darius?”
The mention of Darius’s name sent a jolt of guilt through me. Darius, who had saved my life, who had given me protection and purpose, who had just hours ago promised to come to me tonight.
“Yes,” I said firmly. “Because of Darius.”
Killian laughed softly. “Darius doesn’t own you.”
“That’s not the point.”
“Isn’t it?” Killian asked. “You’re not his property, Clara. You’re a person with your own choices.”
“I’ve made my choice.”
“Have you?” he challenged. “Or did you just accept the only option that was offered to you?”
His words hit uncomfortably close to home. Had I chosen Darius, or had I simply fallen into a situation with him because it was convenient and safe?
“I don’t want to talk about this,” I said.
“Then let’s not talk,” Killian replied.

He shifted again, his hand moving to trace along my collarbone. The touch was light, almost innocent, but it sent shivers through my entire body.
The same shivers I felt when Darius touched me.
“Stop,” I whispered, but I didn’t try to move away.
“You keep saying that,” he observed, “but you’re not actually fighting me anymore.”
He was right. I had stopped struggling against his hold, stopped trying to escape. My body had relaxed into his touch despite my mind’s protests.
Just like it always did with Darius.
“I can give you things he can’t,” Killian murmured, his fingers continuing their gentle exploration. “I
can show you pleasures you’ve never imagined.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, but my voice was getting weaker.
“Don’t I?” he asked. “I can smell how much you want this. I can feel how your body responds to me.”
His hand moved lower, tracing along the edge of my nightgown. The fabric was thin enough that I
could feel the heat of his palm through it.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered. “So perfect.”
I closed my eyes, trying to block out the sensations he was creating. But closing my eyes only made everything feel more intense.
“Open your eyes,” Killian commanded softly.
I obeyed without thinking, and found myself staring directly into his intense green gaze.
“I want you to remember this moment,” he said. “I want you to remember how you feel right now.”
His hand moved to cup my face, his thumb brushing across my cheek. The gesture was surprisingly tender for someone who had just admitted to lying about everything.
“You’re mine,” he said quietly. “You may not understand it yet, but you belong with me.”
“I don’t belong to anyone,” I protested weakly.
“You’re wrong,” he said. “Your body knows it, even if your mind hasn’t accepted it yet.”
To prove his point, he leaned down and pressed his lips to the sensitive spot just below my ear. The contact was brief but electric, sending heat racing through my veins.
I gasped, my body arching toward him before I could stop myself.

“See?” he murmured against my skin. “Your body knows the truth.”

His lips moved lower, trailing soft kisses along my neck. Each touch sent shivers through me, making it harder to think clearly.
“Stop,” I whispered, but my voice came out breathless and wanting.

“You don’t really want me to stop,” he said against my throat. “Your pulse is racing. Your breathing has changed.”
He was right. I could feel my heart pounding so hard I was sure he could hear it.
His hand slipped down to rest against my waist, his fingers tracing small circles through the thin fabric of my nightgown. The touch was light but it made my entire body feel like it was on fire.
The same fire Darius had ignited in me just hours ago.
The thought made me feel even worse about myself. How could I be responding to both of them the same way? What kind of person was I?
“Tell me you don’t want this,” he challenged softly.
I opened my mouth to say exactly that, but no words came out. Because the truth was, I did want
to him in ways I couldn’t control.
The same ways it responded to Darius.
“I thought so,” he said, satisfaction clear in his voice.
His hand moved higher, just barely brushing against the curve of my breast through my nightgown. I gasped at the contact, my back arching without permission.
“So responsive,” he murmured approvingly. “I wonder what other sounds I could make you make.”
Before I could protest, his lips found mine. The kiss was gentle at first, almost teasing, but when I didn’t pull away it became deeper, more demanding.
I found myself kissing him back, my hands moving to grip his shoulders. For a moment, I forgot about everything else. Forgot about Darius, forgot about the complications, forgot about everything except the way Killian was making me feel.
When he finally pulled back, we were both breathing hard.
“Beautiful,” he said, his thumb tracing across my lips. “Absolutely beautiful.”
I felt tears stinging my eyes. Not from what he was doing, but from what I was letting him do.
From how much I was enjoying it.
“I’m a terrible person,” I whispered.
“Why?” Killian asked, his voice genuinely curious.

“Because I’m feeling the same things with you that I feel with him,” I admitted, the words spilling out before I could stop them. “What does that make me?”
“Human,” Killian said simply. “It makes you human.”
“It makes me a slut,” I said, the word tasting bitter in my mouth.
“No,” Killian said firmly. “It makes you a woman who has options. A woman who is desired by powerful men. There’s nothing shameful about that.”
