CHAPTER 88-1

Alpha Killian’s POV

I felt smug as I made my way through the darkened hallways of the pack house. Everything had gone exactly as I planned.

Clara’s reaction had been perfect. The way she had responded to my touch, the way her body had betrayed her even while her mind fought against it. She wanted me just as much as I wanted her

even if she wasn’t ready to admit it yet.

The memory of how she felt in my arms made my wolf purr with satisfaction. Soft skin, racing

pulse, that sweet scent that drove me wild. She was mine, whether she knew it or not.

I moved carefully through the corridors, staying in the shadows and avoiding any areas where pack

members might still be awake. The last thing I needed was someone spotting me when I was

supposed to be unconscious in the hospital.

My plan had worked flawlessly so far. Faking the seizure had been risky, but it was the only way to get everyone to lower their guard. Now I had time to work on Clara without Darius hovering over

her like a possessive guard dog.

I reached the hospital wing without being seen. The hallways were empty except for one nurse at the station, and she was busy with paperwork. I slipped past her and back into my room without making a sound.

I settled back onto the bed and arranged myself in the same position I had been in when they found me unconscious. My body remembered the pose perfectly from hours of practice.

Within moments of lying down, I heard footsteps approaching. Dr. Hayes was making his regular

rounds, just as I had expected.

I kept my breathing shallow and my body completely still as the door opened. This was the moment of truth. If my timing was off, if I had been seen leaving or returning, everything would fall

apart.

Still no change,” I heard Dr. Hayes murmur as he checked the monitors beside my bed.

I waited a few more seconds, then slowly began to stir. Just small movements at first, like someone gradually waking up from a deep sleep.

My eyelids fluttered open, and I blinked several times as if trying to focus on my surroundings.

Alpha Killian?Dr. Hayes said immediately, his voice filled with hope. Can you hear me?

I turned my head slowly toward him, putting on a confused expression like someone who didn’t quite understand where they were.

Doctor?I said weakly, making my voice sound hoarse and uncertain.

Dr. Hayes’s face lit up with relief. Thank the goddess. You’re awake. How are you feeling?

Confused,I replied honestly, though not for the reasons he thought. What happened to me?

You had a seizure,Dr. Hayes explained, moving closer to examine me. You’ve been unconscious

for hours. We were very worried.

I nodded slowly, as if trying to process this information. I don’t remember much.”

That’s normal,Dr. Hayes assured me. Memory gaps are common after seizures. The important

thing is that you’re awake and responsive now.

He began running his standard checks, shining a light in my eyes, checking my reflexes, asking me basic questions about my name and where I was. I answered everything correctly but with just enough hesitation to seem believable.

As he worked, my mind drifted back to Clara. The way she had looked at me when I left her room, confused and wanting and completely unsatisfied. The memory made me smile inwardly.

I thought about how she had felt pressed against me, how her body had responded despite her protests. She could deny it all she wanted, but I knew the truth. We were mates, and her body recognized that even if her mind hadn’t caught up yet.

No matter what Darius said or claimed, I wanted Clara and I would have her. I believed in brotherhood, in the bonds between Alphas who had fought together and shared losses. But I was tired of the lonely life I had been living.

For years I had watched other Alphas find their mates, build families, create something lasting. I had resigned myself to never having that, to leading my pack alone until the day I died.

CHAPTER 88-2

But now the goddess had finally smiled on me. She had given me Clara, a second chance at the kind of happiness I thought was lost forever. I wasn’t going to let that slip away, not for anyone.

Not even for Darius

Your vital signs look good,Dr. Hayes said, finishing his examination. “Much better than they were a few hours ago.

That’s good to hear,I replied.

I want to run a few more tests, but I think you’re out of immediate danger. Your recovery has been

remarkable, actually. Much faster than I expected.

If only he knew why my recovery had been so quick. But that was information I would keep to

myself.

Dr. Hayes was just finishing up his notes when I heard familiar footsteps in the hallway. Heavy

boots, confident stride. Darius was coming.

The door opened and Darius stepped inside, his face carefully neutral. But I could see the tension in his shoulders, the controlled anger in his eyes.

Alpha Darius,Dr. Hayes said respectfully. Alpha Killian has regained consciousness. His condition

has improved significantly.

I can see that,” Darius replied, his gaze fixed on me.

Dr. Hayes continued his report about my condition and prognosis, but I could tell Darius wasn’t really listening. He was studying my face, probably looking for any sign of deception.

I kept my expression calm and slightly tired, like someone who had just woken up from a medical emergency. But inside, I was amused by how frustrated he looked.

I’d like to speak with Alpha Killian privately,Darius said when Dr. Hayes finished his report.

Dr. Hayes looked uncertain. I’m not sure that’s advisable yet. He’s just regained consciousness and should probably rest.”

Darius turned his attention to the doctor, and I saw Dr. Hayes take an unconscious step backward. Even when Darius was being polite, his presence was intimidating.

It will just be a brief conversation,Darius said, though his tone made it clear this wasn’t really a

request.

Dr. Hayes looked at me questioningly. I nodded slightly to show that I was fine with it, though I made sure to look a bit uncertain, as if I wasn’t sure I was strong enough for visitors yet.

Alright,Dr. Hayes said reluctantly. But please keep it short. He needs rest.

Of course,Darius agreed.

Dr. Hayes gathered his things and left the room, closing the door behind him. The moment we

were alone, the atmosphere in the room changed completely.

Darius didn’t say anything at first. He just stood there looking at me with those cold blue eyes, as if

he could see right through my performance.

I waited patiently for him to speak. I was curious to see how he would handle this conversation,

whether he would confront me directly or try to be subtle about it.

Finally, Darius moved closer to my bed and spoke.

I’m going to pretend I didn’t see that interaction,he said quietly. Because all I care about is Clara, and I’m giving you one chance to do the right thing.

I raised an eyebrow, maintaining my innocent expression. I’m sorry, what interaction? I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Darius’s jaw tightened. Don’t play games with me, Killian. I know what you did.

I’ve been unconscious,I replied calmly. Dr. Hayes just confirmed that I only woke up a few

minutes ago.

Cut the act,” Darius growled. I know you weren’t really unconscious. I know you went to her room.

I could have continued denying it, but there was no point. Darius was smarter than that, and we

both knew it.

Prove it,” I said simply.

Darius’s hands clenched into fists. I don’t need to prove anything. I just need you to stay away

from my woman.
